Comment:

Karlsen is a caring and motherly figure, "for the people"; to me a binding factor in the department. Magnificent time manager despite canceling class at times (she's a working artist). You'll learn the fundamentals of design. It's dry, technical, no bull. Liberating to confused artsy kids, and usefull for anyone interested in efficient thinking!

i LOVED the visual examples that are given with each assignment. she encourages talking to classmates and looking at other people's work to inspire you. please pay attention and always ask her questions she actually is very attentive and will work with you based on your level in art (even if you suck, TRUST ME)! my favorite was color theory!

The assignments she gives are incredibly boring and tedious. Very vague instructions and can come off condescending when explaining projects. During the 2nd half of the semester she will start giving projects every class and it can become very difficult to manage if you have other classes. I would never take this professor ever again.

Shes the type that usually just small lectures and throws assignments at you with little information. And when she does talk about art assignments, get ready to be bored. Not to mention she would either not be in the class or would cancel many classes as well. She was alright as a person, but as a professor not so much. Just take her if needed.

Professor Karlsen is a true class act! Not only is she a great instructor, she is also a working artist. I would much rather learn from someone that can talk the talk and walk the walk. I had her last fall for Design 10A and looking forward to seeing her this fall for Drawing 20B. I am looking to add to my portfolio so I can apply to UCLA!!

Professor Karlsen was awesome! Always willing to help you out when you needed it. I don't know why she's getting a bad rap, she really knows here stuff! We learned a lot about color theory and had interesting projects.. Take her! She got a great sense of humor and makes class fun.

Professor Carlsen is a professional artist, google her, who has been teaching and making art for a long time. Energy drained from class because of some apathetic students--don't be like this : ) She strived to keep the energy high and engaged. She is very fair and encouraging. She wants to help and my drawing improved. She deserves a lot of respect

She gives a heads up, if you want an easy class to as an elective. This is not that class. If you want to learn, work and participate, Take her class! This class requires a lot of your work. I actually learned a lot in this class. I earned my A but it required good effort and work.

Had to withdraw. Her teaching style is backwards. She'll define a few terms, vaguely tell us the assignment, show examples, wait a week for u to do it, THEN tell u what she was looking for, what u did wrong, & tell u to redo it. Before u know it, u have 5 projects to redo that could have been avoided if she was more clear. She'll only help if u ask

The projects you get to do are great, especially if you want to gain a solid foundation in your art technique. She's clear in her teaching, and really just a sweet lady. To be honest though, she's pretty boring to listen to when she lectures (which isn't much). I enjoy the class best when we just draw or paint. But I do appreciate her critiques.

I'm not much of an artist and knew nothing about color or shading, but by the end of this class I made some pretty amazing pieces and really surprised myself. I wouldn't say it was easy but it was definitely worth it. She is very fair and understanding of your skill level - I learned A LOT. definitely recommended for beginners and pros alike.

When it comes to drawing and painting, it's another language to me. I do not have an art bone in my body. This professor is a fair grader and doesn't compare your work to the best. If instructions are followed and she sees improvement, you pass. I will not take another art class because it's not my thing, but this was educational. Cool professor.

If you're lazy and absent, don't take this class. She is a pro artist, and she honestly is not a hard grader as long as you do what she asks. Most people just turn in half finished work and get upset if she doesn't give you an A. As long as you communicate with her, build a relationship with her. She encourages your individual artistic expression.

I disliked the material kits for the class.Don't listen to her so called money saving if you buy them,you'll end up wasting more.And like everyone else said she favorites students a lot.I saw a lot of good artists in that class and I felt like they didn't get the recognition and praise they deserved because they weren't her favorites.

I took her for 10A and 20B. I learned a lot in 10 A. I enjoyed learning different art styles in the proyects she gave. This is a portfolio oriented course so you have to have taken 20A prior to the class or else you will be complaining that is hard. I honestly thought the class was easy and informative.
