Lecture is easy enough but tests are almost impossible to study for. She tells you to redo the readings and listen to all the music examples cause she could throw anything on there. Don't buy the MindTap access code, she'll show you everything you need in class. Grading for papers is arbitrary, just include stuff from class and you'll get an A.

Prof. Rasmussen has plenty of experience in the middle east and playing middle eastern music. Her class can be really fun, and she's like a mom to her students. She can be a little disorganized and grading is a bit unclear, but that's a small problem compared to how much you'll learn when you take this class.

Comment:
Her expectations are unclear and she seems very unorganized. She gives a lecture, but still gives exams on the information. Also, derive from her and her colleges, so she will often talk about herself and her affinity for ethno-musicology. The information on tests is also unclear, because of the nature of the class and density of information.

very knowledgable abt ethnomusicology & knows a lot of people in the field. but her class was honestly an acid trip she would make noises and play piano. very disorganized person but her class was fun & we actually went on many field trips (including a bob dylan concert) final was a podcast which was cool . i never read and shes an essay grader

My experience with her was a poor one. Classes and textbook did not prepare me for the exams, they were absurd in my opinion. The class is easygoing but then the exams were ridiculous. Very unclear and misleading expectations. Sent a condescending email when I pointed this out to her which I laughed at. Should've retired a long time ago.

Professor Rasmussen is clearly passionate about her subject and I see why some like her. She wasn't really my cup of tea, however. She just kind of does her own thing (once made us go to class at 9 on what was supposed to be a snow delay, isn't all that understanding of her students, and as a non-music person, I was sometimes lost.

Taking American Soundscapes with Professor Rasmussen for my freshman seminar was a great choice! She is really passionate about what she teaches and the class covered really interesting material. Participation makes the class more enjoyable and reading the material is pretty important. I would highly highly recommend taking a class with her!

Disorganized and spacey. Lectures are all over the place, though interesting enough. There are 2 concert reports, a group project (with extremely ambiguous instructions), participation grade, 2 midterms, and a final (in class test+ 2 take-home essays). Tests are either easy or weirdly difficult. Grading is subjective. Do not take for GER 4B.

By the second day of class Prof. Rasmussen had learned all of our names! She knows how to engage college students and encouraged us all to stop by her office several times during the semester; she really made the effort to get to know us. During discussions she tends to monopolize, but she has many interesting stories to tell.

Absolutely loved this class (Worlds of Music). I'd recommend it to anyone and everyone. Prof Rasmussen has her moments of brilliance, but she can be a little much to handle. She thinks she knows everything and can be a little close minded. Beware of her misleading you on what to expect on tests.

She was a polarizing force; the music majors seemed to love her, but everyone else was not too happy. She was very spacey and anecdotal, but she knows her stuff for sure. Class has a fair amount of easy points, but tests are tough to do better than a B. Read all the assigned article readings (2/week and know the music examples to do well on tests

I found her to be very disorganized. She came into class and didnt know what to do next, just wang it. Assumes prior knowledge which she tests on. Exams excessively long, largely drawn from information in readings, which are oceans of detail (more than you care for) Unclear in expectations for exams, papers

I love Rasmussen! She is one of the greatest professors I've had here and also very helpful as an advisor. She has a wide range of knowledge in many fields and I think that's sometimes why her classes can seem confusing because she knows SO much and wants to convey it all. She is very approachable and I just love her!

I LOVE HER. she's funny and quirky and kind of spacey, but she knows what she's talking about from personal experience and she draws from lots of different media. go to class, read the text, listen to the music, and you're set. Don't expect her to remember your name unless you're a music or anthro major, but she's helpful if you need help.

This class was my second or third choice for my freshman seminar, and although meeting at 9 am three times a week was a pain, classes were interesting. She has a great sense of humor and is INSANELY talented. We had the opportunity to read the manuscript for her upcoming book. SHE'S GREAT, I couldn't ask for a better freshman seminar teacher...

Completely arbitrary in grading. Is clear as mud regarding expectations. Completely disregarded several students in class, complained a lot, did not use a $30 required text. Probably fine if you're a music major--otherwise, don't bother. There are more rewarding classes elsewhere.

Knowledgeable, helpful, likes class interaction, easy tests (if you go to class and read), a little conceeded (but she's nice). I learned a lot from this class. A great GER 4B class. If you put forth some effort and A is definitely possible. Make sure you listen to the CDs often and take notes on guest speakers and videos!

I'm not sure about this 'loudness' obsession with the professor. I have to agree she is not only excited about what she is teaching but she has first hand knowledge OF what she is teaching. She is VERY helpful to those who make the effort to not only attend class (highly recommended) but to those who go to office hours as well.

I'll be a junior and will have had Anne 5 times since i've been at w&m- so i really know what i'm talking about here. yes she's loud, but only bc she's excited about what she teaches. i suggest taking her upper level ethnomusicology classes and not worlds of music so much. 2 papers, midtern + final w listening, IDs, short answer, 1 essay
