Mrs. Smart (D.A. still lists her as Slothower) is a very unique individual. She is a little eccentric but she cares greatly about the students. You will be expected to pass a series of tests on verb forms, write weekly for the first half of the quarter, do a little reading. Sense of humor recommended. Easy A! She wanted less advanced English papers and more of our opinions. People say they didnt learn anything about writing but she did tell us that she wasnt going to teach us how to write since we should already know. Shes blunt and straightforward. I had it easy bc she liked me. Cant say the same for others. Just come to class and dont be lat

Professor Smart doesn't know how to teach, grade, or keep on track. She spends most of the class period speaking of trivial matters, and though she's knowledgeable you're never going to learn anything useful. I got an A, but the class was a waste of time. She also likes to pick favorites, so suck up and talk in class.

Ariel Slothower is an amazing instructor who is extremely knowledgeable and engaging. I left with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the English language. She transformed the process of learning Shakespeare from daunting to do-able and has increased my interest and enthusiasm for the playwright and English Literature in general. Stellar!

Take her class for an easy A. She's very understanding if you're under certain stresses because of work, but she doesn't give a dam even if you're an A student, that is, if you miss 2 classes, you're dropped from the class. She likes to help although she is very unclear when giving deadlines and things to do for homework, so better ask!

One of the worst and most irritating teachers I have taken at De Anza. The teacher is useless, wastes time in class, derails class frequently and basically loves the sound of her own voice. All the work is below middle school level. I didn't read any of the books assigned and just used sparknotes.

This class was exactly like highschool...BS a bunch of busy work for an A. I had her 730am class and man it was hard to stay awake, easily the most boring and pointless class I've taken at De Anza. Very unclear on due dates and assignments too. The only upside was this class was a super easy A.

Had her for 1A and 1B. If English is your first/primary language it should be a breeze as long as you can write a coherent paper. She has a strong emphasis on Shakespeare; but the reading is light (3-4 books). Remember what she says: she literally gives you test/paper answers before you take/write them. Easy A, but I am majoring in English.
