One of those professors who assigns their own textbook. She assigns a TON of reading to be done each class but you're only graded by a few papers. Her lectures are boring and generally painful to sit through. She takes attendance, but not in every class. An easy A and the readings are interesting, but she's very scattered and disorganized.

While the material was interesting and easy to grasp/develop into papers, her delivery was average at best. Her lectures lacked focus and organization. Midterm and final are relatively easy; the questions were given a week in advance. As long as you do the readings, you should do fine.

Latin American Cities was well executed. I've learned a lot and it's opened my eyes in ways I can't imagine. Well worth taking for a Cultures and Context requirement. The lectures have surprise attendance so you could possibly miss and not have it matter. All papers were responses . Mid-term and Final were easy-you were given the questions.

I really enjoyed her class, Latin American Cities. I felt like I learned a lot of useful information throughout the the course from the lectures and the TAs were very helpful in sessions. In addition to feeling like I had learned something, this class was one of my least stressful courses this semester, the work and exams were straight forward.

Arlene is a brilliant scholar, however, not the best professor. Her classes were very unorganized. She constantly changed the schedule around and always sent out five emails before every class making a change in the reading. For the final paper, she did't clarify what she wanted. over all the class was pointless.

Professor Davila was entertaining, but hardly educational. She was charming in class, but openly admitted that she hadn't read the texts in years. Needless to say, it was easy to get an A, but I only learned what I read in the books. Class discussions contributed basically nothing.

Professor Dávila is amazing. I took her class years ago and still use the information i learned form her class. She is brilliant, beautiful, and inspirational. If you put in the time and effort, she can be a great mentor. If you're not interested in engaging with the material, that's not her fault. She is the best at what she does. Take her class.

Comment:
She is crazy and rarely makes a point with her statements. Lectures were all over the place. I learned almost nothing in her class even though I attended every lecture. The books she selected were quite repetitive and tedious to read. It was easy to get and A but the class was way to painful to be worth it. Stay away from this World Cultures class.

One of the best classes, and best professor's I've every encounter. She's extremely helpful with students, caring, and considerate. Put your time into the readings, engage with classroom discussion, and you'll be fine. You will get your money and time's worth.

To put it 'nicely', better scholar than teacher. She doesn't go out of her way for her students. She hardly responds to emails and doesnt make herself available. She dominates conversation in class, sometimes to show how erudite she is. feels like a lecture-environment... wish someone else taught this course (culture and consumption)

Vague, flaky, confusing. But if you just write down everything she says and rewrite it in your papers with a couple of quotes. It is enough for an A. The books are really hard but you don't have to read them fully if you go to class. Just write everything down you can.

She's very knowledgable (she's a well-respected scholar in her field) but I think she's a better scholar than teacher. She's really spacey and often goes off on tangents.
