Oh boy. He is very passionate about and pretty good at what he teaches and clearly cares a lot about his students learning. However he strayed so far away from the standard Music Theory I curriculum, I felt ridiculously underprepared for Theory II. The final paper was VERY challenging and don't feel it helped me understand theory.

where did this guy COME FROM. we are incredibly fortunate to have him. really knows what he is talking about. had him as a guest lecturer in a neuro course on music and the brain, and he applied his knowledge on musicology to our course so well and made us literally get out of our seats.

Cox is amazing. He's incredibly fun in class and even better one on one. He's always going out of his way to help students who are struggling. His attitude towards his students is one of respect and he gives you the sense that he actually cares if you understand the information he's teaching you.

A truly excellent professor. All 4 aural skills classes with him are challenging, but you learn a lot and he is incredibly helpful. Worth taking his class.

A really interesting and helpful professor. I was a little frustrated with his class though because I really wanted to learn music theory, but we mostly just focused on his book about mimetic engagement in music.

I took his intro theory class for non-music majors, kind of on a whim. It was so worth it. Prof Cox is one of the smartest, kindest, funniest, and most helpful people I know. He expects a lot, but he will go so out of his way to help you meet those expectations. He'll also reward you for effort if you struggle with the coursework.

Because my music theory background is not strong, I had a lot of trouble keeping when the class started. But Dr. Cox was always willing to help when I couldn't do the homework. He'll sit down with you or answer your emails. He is also one of the smartest people I know. And he makes the class really fun and interesting.

Dr. Cox is my favorite teacher at Oberlin Conservatory. I always liked Music theory, but now I LOVE it. He is probably the most interesting person in the world.

A fantastic Aural Skills professor. Though he may assign a lot of work, he is always willing to help and make sure you understand. Quirky guy, but take his class if you get the chance.

Yes, he makes you work. It's school. Unlike some professors, his work actually HELPS you learn. He's so into all aspects of music, and it really shows. His classes cover everything from Tool to Bach to Mozart to Part and beyond! Not your boring, dry analysis class. He can show you how theory can be fun.

Mr. Cox is very quirky indeed, but probably the best Aural Skills teacher at Oberlin! I also had him for Theory classes. He assigns a lot of work, but it is usually very helpful. He is always available outside of class (I highly recommend meeting with him, even if not talking about class-related material!) And he introduces you to great music :):)

As a freshman, I arrived in Arnie's theory 101 class, pissed because I had been one point away from testing out of it. Miles Davis was playing as we came in and I never looked back. One of the best things about Dr. Cox is authenticity. He loves music, teaches it well and revels in thought-provoking discussions. Get any class you can with him!

Quirky dude, but in a fun way. He teaches well, and cares about his students. The class format is always the same, which can get boring, but he occasionally spices it up with an awesome piece of music. He's very helpful too.

Arnie is quite the gentleman. He can be very random, but he tried very hard to answer questions and make sure he is understood. He goes beyond the music. He ask bigger questions, rather than the small ones. if you are tired of mus theory, take Mr. Cox, cause he will show you another side.

He really cares about each student and their progress towards having better aural skills, which makes all the difference. He takes the extra time. It's unfortunate that so many students don't take advantage of his interest by not working hard on their skills.

Mr. Cox is a great guy, all around. He's one of those rare people who gets away with being totally into mus theory. his classes take a lot of time, but you get a great sense of how music works, which is the key to music theory, more than paradigms and all the rest. good prep for other classes.

Arnie Cox can teach well. I will say that for him. On all other fronts, I find him sort of creepy. He says things in class that I'm not sure I would if I were in his shoes. I'd rather have a less effective teacher than deal with his eccentricities.
