Comment:

Dr. Meyer is a fantastic professor, though as many have said, he is a difficult grader. This was my second class with Avis (the first being CMM 140, Film Criticism), and I am taking him a third time in the fall. Take this class if you want to learn how to edit like a pro, not if you want an easy A.

Dr. Meyer is one of those rare professors that you want to work hard for. His knowledge about journalism and life is priceless. He has inspired me to be a better writer and can't wait to take editing next semester. I got an A- because I really worked for it, but he made me want to work for it. It was a rewarding class.

I had Prof Meyer for journalism and editing. B in journalism, A- in editing and I worked HARD for that A-. He was by far the best prof I had at SLU--extremely knowledgeable, helpful, interesting, and actually CARES about his students. A good recommendation from him helped me get an internship at SLM and he continues to send me info on job openings.

Dr. Meyer is a wonderful teacher but a very harsh grader. I’m taking 7 classes this semester & this is the only one I’ll be getting less than an A in. I very much enjoyed this course & believe I learned a lot, but I think prospective students should be aware that it’s virtually impossible to get an A from Dr. Meyer without prior subject experience.

I LOVE AVIS MEYER. He is absolutely my favorite professor at SLU. His classes are definitely not an easy A, but if you go to class, read, and do the work, it is absolutely 100% worth it. I never want to miss his class, and I can tell that he genuinely wants his students to succeed and do well. He also has really great stories, and he is brilliant.

I took Avis for Film Criticism because he is so legendary. Class was basically just watching the movies and Avis lecturing. Sometimes lectures could get boring but Avis is just so interesting to listen to that most of the time he can hold your attention. VERY difficult to get an A but actually not very hard at all to bet a B. Great class!

TAKE NOVELS TO FILM OVER GREAT BOOKS. This class was amazing, its a shame that THIS is only a semester. He's is really interesting and the class is just read the book, discuss, watch the movie, then write the paper. It can feel like a lot but he's 1 of those profs that you put in the extra effort for bc you don't want to disappoint him. So great.

took meyer for novel to film, honors great books class. One of my favorite classes - a ton of reading, and he is a decently hard grader, but worth it. He is interesting to listen to, and the movies and books you cover are really good. Definitely recommend over normal great books

Meyer will not let you get an A! If you're looking for an elective this is not the class to take. Only take if you have a strong interest in journalism. He is so particular and tedious but a fun teacher! There's going to be quizzes, and a big test at the end. He's very easy going and will let you turn in some assignments late.

No matter what you will do, he will find something wrong, but other than that, you will learn real world skills in whatever course he teaches. do not take if you have a tough courseload. Fantastic professor. An exceptionally hard grader when it comes to daily assignments, quizzes, and the like, but there is never any homework and (because this is editing) no way to study. Always keeps our interest and shares his experiences. Dr. Meyer is one that I'll remember, and I definately recommend him!

Meyer is the best journalism professor ever. Don't expect to get an A. Editing is extremely hard, especially with Meyer. However, he'll prepare you to pass any copy-editing test out there. Entertaining and always has a great story. A true asset for SLU.
