Comment:
Evidently lectures are not open discussion, even though she gave my classmate permission to speak. She didn't even let the guy finish talking, which is very rude and unprofessional. We didn't even hear the point he was trying to make because this instructor had to make a big deal over a minor detail the student mentioned. Avoid her.

Babette is a genius in her craft. That being said, though she may be incredibly knowledgable when it comes to film production, her accent, impatient personality, & strong one-sided opinions makes it very difficult to keep up and/or get a good grade. However, if you can manage to use her feedback correctly and/or get on her good side, you'll be set.

Very difficult to understand. Most of the films were interesting, but there is a lot you need to watch. She is not clear on what she expects you to know. You need to do more than just watch the films to prepare for exams; but Babette does poorly in lecturing this information to you. Hard to take good notes...

Cannot understand her. Confusing as to what exactly she is looking for in papers and tests. Films, however, where very interesting. Overall, she is not very concise in her information she gives and a bit difficult to get a good grade.

She was one of the worst teachers ever.I couldn't understand her at all, and gave up on taking notes the first day. She is awful and so are the movies she makes you watch. This is a realistic review of her class I'm not just complaining. oh and the Final was absurd, no way to prepare.

I sat in THE FRONT, and she is still hard to understand. The final was "easy" in the sense where you watched the movie and understood it, then good for you but because you're watching anywhere from 2-6 movies a week that's almost 60 movies you have to know! IMPOSSIBRU! Papers are alright, just go to your TA for that.

This class was bad. Her expectations were clear.... Clearly impossible. It's extremely difficult understanding her-- I sat second row in front of her and still managed to get out of class with barely any notes. WAY TOO MANY FILMS TO MEMORIZE and watch entirely within the given time. I have never been so urged to "rate" a professor until this class.

Extremely frustrating class! Really hard to understand because of her french accent and she always murmur into the mic. Impossible to take notes during 3 hours lecture. Grading depends on your TA and how well they think you did your papers.

It is disappointing that my future is affected by a woman so incapable of truly teaching the knowledge we expect to be receiving when we go into the classes she teaches. We see the name of the class and expect one thing, and then her curriculum does not reflect the name and description of the class whatsoever.

She is horrible. She can't teach. She doesn't believe in showing examples of what she wants cause apparently it "prevents us from being creative." so we are left not really knowing what she wants which leads to her telling us we don't know what we are doing or are incompetent. Her way of helping you is by basically telling you your work is crap.

First off, anyone else think she looks and acts a bit like Prof. Trelawney from Harry Potter?! She is very knowledgeable but her thick French accent makes her lectures extremely difficult to follow. Lots of films to watch which is interesting but takes time and attention.

Really hard to understand her and to take interest into what she is saying. Impossible to take notes from her lectures, and the final consisted of all she had said throughout the quarter and many many films... Very frustrating class.

Babette is really passionate and knowledgeable about film, but she is very very difficult to understand. Very thick accent + big lecture hall= no comprehension. She's really nice and willing to help, but a three hour block of class where you can't understand the lecture and can't take notes is really a bummer.

1 problem is she requires too many films to be seen. You don't get to learn about the films in section either because she overloads it w/more films to see & requires you to see films outside of class (and are never discussed) that appear on the final. She's nice, but lectures are short and hardly correspond to the text. But maybe I just had a bad TA

I cannot comment about her clearly because she was not Clear too. It takes time to get to use her accent. the film she showed in the class was interesting but if her lecture is not important when it goes to the test. So much reading and you have to read very carefully in order to pass.

i've had her for two quarters and if i added up the number of words i understood from her it just may be about two sentences long. yells at the students at a volume of 180 decibels(that is the amount at which hearing tissues die.) essay topics are easy. pray for a fair TA. final exam not difficult, but laborous.

Mangolte is a very qualified teacher for this course; she is quite famous in underground French independent film director circles. On the other hand, aside from her thick accent, she simply is not as engaging as she could be. Additionally, her communication with her TAs was poor, so information regarding midterms or final exams was spotty, at best.

Sat in front of class; could not understand her through her thick accent. Used the book, but wasn't helpful. Was better off not stressing over reading. Pay attention in Discussion though; that's where you'll learn most for the final. Easy class, but didn't learn too much.

Impossible to understand, its supposed to be the history of film but it seems she is biased toward certain films, lectures are useless, TA's do all the teaching in section, entire class has to sign in after each lecture and lectures never end early.

Extemely boring. Unorganized in structure of the class, topic. She just heard herself talking about nothing in particular with the class. Just many things at the same time. Very sad that she is consider by UCSD as one of the upper division classes. I wonder if the dean would botter to read our concerns. Do no take it if you want to learn really.
