Comment:
I don't think I've ever taken a class this boring. I tried to give her class a chance, but it never got interesting and it was about as educational as first grade. No, really, we spent an entire two weeks talking about how words can change meaning depending on the context. Expectations and rubric for the course were not discussed, either.

Prof Dancygier was awesome! She condensed the material for us into lecture notes so we didn't have to read the tedious textbook. She also tried to help out students who struggled by shifting weighting of the 3 tests and 1 paper. If you are good with grammar, you'll do extremely well in this class. If not, you may be in trouble! Average was low 70s.

Barbara was one of the best professors Ive had so far at UBC - it was clear how much she genuinely cared about her students, her lessons were well-paced and interesting, and there were no quizzes or midterms, just take-home assignments. I would take another course of hers again in a heartbeat!

For the bulk of the semester, I truly disliked the course. But Barbara eventually grew on me as I understood her teaching style; it's hard for any prof to be clearcut with the kind of material offered. The textbook is excellent & helpful. Barb's eager to help & answer questions, and is a prof that fairly rewards effort as she sees fit. Recommend!

An extremely nice lady. If you're willing to contribute to discussion and show actual thought she's super open and accepting of all opinions. Subject was a bit murky at times, but she did her best and it wasn't too bad! Always willing to chat after class if stuff is unclear, and very constructive in her feedback. Take her class!

She is fantastic! I love her! She is so warm and appreciative of student involvement and discussion. She creates an amazing atmosphere and I learnt a lot. I'm a business major and I am so glad I took this class. Participate in class and you will derive a lot of value.

Words cannot even begin to describe how much I love this woman. She is one of my all-time favorite profs at UBC and if I could, I would take pretty much every class she ever teaches.

Easy, easy, easy! I'd nearly have 100% in the class if I didn't make a few silly mistakes on the tests. I just wish the lectures were more engaging, but that's somewhat difficult considering the size of our class.

Person: she's kind, patient, caring, and quite clear with explanations in-class. But she doesn't challenge & inspire you to do well. Lectures sometimes felt improvisational. Course: VERY interesting & important subject, but lacked coherence. Easy workload, but marking is unclear and feedback isn't constructive. Don't regret taking it though.

This class had no structure, rhyme or reason. Some of the concepts were interesting, but Dancygier's explanations were often long-winded and complicated. There was no Course Pack, but she threw random loose leafs at us a lot. If you're not a very organized person, you're screwed. And if you're not an English major, you probably won't enjoy it.

Great professor, one of the best I've had at UBC! Very clear in her lectures and very organized. What she has to teach may not be what you're interested in, but she does an amazing job at helping you understand regardless. Her tests are extremely fair and she preps you in advance. Thumbs up!

Easy, but BORING. She's a nice person, and really makes an effort in her teaching. She obviously loves what she's doing, but the content of the course was not interesting and the discussion very basic.

I struggled a bit with this course because it was very abstract. She explained things clearly, and was very helpful outside of class. Allowed me to redo my assignement which i was greatful for. Final is not that bad if you study for it. Firm but fair.
