Please note that those who are accusing Gluck of being a "harsh grader" and "unfair" can barely type a legible comment. Yes, there are a lot of readings and she isn't an easy grader, but her teachings and critique help you become a better writer and critical thinker. Definitely recommend if you wish to read great literature & improve your writing!

Comment:
After all assignments are handed in and graded, Gluck discusses what she would consider to be an "A" paper/assignment. Everything she mentions will most likely be in your paper, yet you'll somehow end up with a C. This woman is the epitome of a "GPA killer."

If you are an English major or minor, you should really consider taking her class. I am pretty confident in my writing abilities and I received an A on all of the papers I handed in. If English really isn't your passion and you are looking for an easy grade, she is not the professor for you. I found her to be funny and supportive.

Excellent professor. She is kind but very strict. Study the material and read her comments on your writing. Form study groups to find as many different angles as possible, seriously. Don't expect her to compromise her standards, YOU must work up to hers!

Overall, she is a really bad professor.I really read the assigned readings (about 40+ a week) and really understood it, but her expectation is too ambiguous. Her grading is HARSH. I wrote factual answers to support the questions and i would get a big c+ or b-. She ruined the class experience, and especially some great books.

Don't. Just don't. She's an impossible grader and criticisms are, for the most part, invalid and stylistic choices. The class I was in came to the general conclusion that she did not get the memo that this wasn't a PHD class. Avoid at all costs, your GPA will thank you.

I hate her. Expects way too much for a 2nd level Eng course. I feel like I'm in 9th grade english again - that was 10 years ago. You can be an exceptional writer and still wind up with a B on a paper. She needs to retire already.

Very rigid and not open to discussion which is weird because this is an English Lit class. This lady is confused... she thinks the class is an intro to editing not a lit class. No matter how well you have previously done in your English classes, your papers will come back covered completely in red ink with a big red B- if you're lucky. Not helpful

Prof. Gluck is really sweet and nice, but don't let that fool you. She's one tough cookie and there is NOTHING easy about her classes. If you love to read and aren't afraid of a challenge then this is the professor for you.

I won't say she's a bad teacher, but completely takes the fun out of English. If you love the subject, don't take her. Ruined the experience of reading some of the best books in literature. Here's the problem: Its a college level course, and she treats it like its a 2nd course. I got a good enough grade, but still feel it was a waste of time.

Spring '09, I LOVED THIS CLASS. Seriously, she is an excellent professor, but with that package comes harsh grading. It's funny she decided not give out evaluations at the end of the semester because she thought people would rate her low as revenge for being caught plagiarizing. I pulled out a B+ and I was the best student in the class relatively.

Lovely professor, sweet, and gives you the grades you deserve. I worked hard on the essays and got all A's. If you read the material you should do fine on the exams. She s the type of teacher that will tell you interesting and funny stories about the authors you read, as well as really provide a history of what you are reading.

Gluck must've been a journalist prior to her teaching career. She edits your papers to death but provides helpful feedback. Two papers (3-5 pages), one midterm, one final. Lots of reading so BE PREPARED. Excellent choice of authors however.
