This professor makes the lecture material come to life in his classes. He is funny and there really is never a dull moment in his class. He is a tough grader but very fair. I have taken two of his classes and I wouldn't hesitate to take another.

Ferst is really passionate about what he teaches! He does have a few questions on his tests that seem vague, but overall he tries to set you up for success. He takes almost all of his test and lecture material from the required text. The only thing is that he expects you to show up for class. We only have 4 exams and 2 homework packets.

The grading is not clear. On the second test I missed six TF questions, that's all that I missed on the entire test and I got a "C" on the test. Missing class lowers your grade every time after two missed classes. Knows a lot about what he is talking about and is passionate about Philosophy. I don't recommend him or his classes though.

Dr. Ferst is helpful if you ask, but you have to ask. He explains things in a way that is modern and makes sense and if you do not get it then he will explain it again a different way. He is an amazing teacher who loves philosophy. You do have to study for the good test grades. He makes philosophy interesting.

I took a summer Philosophy course. Philosophy of Islam. I had no experience with philosophy, and Ferst made it fun to come to a class so long. While he is a great guy and good professor, his essay exams are ridiculous. Make sure you do well on the vocabulary exams as those will save your grade.

Ferst is a funny guy & you can tell he cares about the subject. Pretty easy class. A few simple reports, a few exams. The long class though makes the lectures difficult to sit through. One of the textbooks goes directly with lectures and is necessary. Barely used the others though.

Ferst is a good teacher but he does except a substantial amount for a hundred level class. This class was to fill a requirement but I'd argue that I learned a great deal about ancient philosophy. Just make sure you put the time in to study for tests/quizzes. Visit him in his office to get on his good side.

Dr. Ferst has extensive knowledge on his subject. He is an excellent professor, but be prepared for a hard class. He can make the most boring, complicated philosoper exciting and clear to underderstand. I highly recommend taking a class from him.

Dr. Ferst may initially come off as a very intimidating professor, especially in regards to his standards for the quality of papers he expects out of his students, but he is extremely reasonable and cares about his students. He won?t ever let the class stray too far off topic, so it?s not worth trying. He knows his stuff!
