It is with great sadness that I write to let everyone know about the passing of Dr William F. Coughlin on May 6, 2009. He continued educating through his entire battle with cancer at UMASS Lowell and is missed by all that took the time to understand him and what he was about.

Dear Dr. Coughlin - you were my favorite teacher at ULowell in the 70's. I am now a college prof myself and have thought of you often over the years and am grateful for all you taught the engineering students who were interested in other things about writing. I left your classes as a much-improved, more confident writer. Bravo!

Awesome teacher. Class was always interesting. He has an awesome sense of humor as well. People tend to take him way to seriously. This is a hard class though. If you are looking for an easy grade look elsewhere. I highly recommend his class to anyone.

He is the funniest teacher and he teaches you more than you can believe. don't expect to get As in that class, you gotta work at it. All in all his class was fair and hes a great guy. sucks to think that hes might leave this semester.

I learned more about writing in Dr. Coughlin's class than I have in my life as a student. If you are looking for a teacher you can b/s, look elsewhere. His class is very simple, you are only graded on papers (about 5-8) and a final. He gives you an extremely helpful/important packet on writing at the end of the semester, make sure to keep it!

I felt like i did poorly on almost all the papers but after the final I got a B+. Our class started with about 30 people, but by the 3rd week we were down to about 15...I'm sure you can assume why he freaked people out..but c'mon people we are in COLLEGE for a reason...do the work get a good grade, and learn from a prof that is actually intelligent

He is such a funny teacher and teaches well.To all of you who are saying that he is not a good teacher and what not you need to realize that he is really trying to make you think and to learn the right way to write.Maybe if you try a little harder you will realize that.If you do not want to learn then take the course with another professor and pass

He is one of the only professors I look back on and qualify as a GOOD teacher. His class is difficult and you have to work hard, but he will teach you so much about writing properly, and his dry sense of humor is hilarious. The only people who rated Dr. Coughlin poorly, were the students who didn't try, looking for a free ride.

Very intelligent, but I feel like he just didn't try. Class consisted of him reading a story aloud and telling us that the theme was obvious and we were stupid for not realizing it. He never even gave us a written assignment for any of our papers - he just told us to "analyze a story." Oh, and double space between sentences or he'll freak out.

He's about the only professor who will teach you how to write properly. If you're willing to put the effort in and actually do some work, you'll learn more than you ever thought. Those that trash talk him probably don't understand him or more importantly can't string a compound sentence together. And his rolex is real for the putz who flunked.
