When she walks in the room you're shocked that this liberal old lady that wears the same thing everyday is teaching you communication and popular culture. And then she begins to speak. She encourages you to engage in dialogue. And if you are engaged, you just might learn some incredible things from her that will truly change your life. Take her.

Dervin is amazing. If you take her class, you're learning from the absolute best. She's in the top 1% of all communication scholars (VERY well published) so in all honesty, while it may be a 'different' kind of class for you, it's actually a real honor to learn from her.

Dr. D was an incredible, helpful professor and the class has propelled my career in journalism by leaps and bounds. The syllabus is spelled out in extreme clarity. Deadlines were flexible and attendance was only required 50% of the time. Extremely helpful course, would recommed to all journalism students. My interviewing skills have benefited!

She's crazy. She loves to talk about herself and you never really learn anything. Do the work, don't waste your time on buying the books, go to class just to figure out her book of a syllabus and get your participation. No way to not get an A if you do the work. You can keep on turning in assignments until you get the grade you want.

this woman is insane. i'm pretty sure she makes up stories. you will spend the ENTIRE quarter going over the 22 page syllabus and even on the last day you will still be confused. If you want a good laugh and stories to tell your friends, i would suggest taking her. with that said, avoid at all costs.

You will learn how to get the most out of an interview from Dr. D. She is charming(& a wee bit quirky). She is clearly dedicated to teaching and to Sense-Making Methodology. She teaches didactically (ie, by discussion rather than lecture) which makes the time fly. The assignments are not due on a strict schedule, so self-discipline is essential.

Dervin's pop. culture course is much easier than her interviewing course, largely due to the content of study. Dervin's classroom is a fun atmosphere for learning. She offers great insight into the larger world of Comm. The go-at-your-own-pace structure made balancing my class work a breeze (don't procrastinate!) Excellent course and professor!

Dervin's class is not easy for many students because you actually have to THINK. I thought it was appropriately challenging and uniquely rewarding. Dervin goes the extra mile to make complex information accessible to students and she is continuously offering help. This is a teacher who loves to TEACH, not just to lecture from a power point.

Dr. Dervin's class is not easy! That being said I can't think of too many negative things to say about her. She makes her students challenge themselves and work hard. To be successful in the class students must be organized and set their own schedule. Some may not like it, I did, because I feel it will be useful to me in the real world. THANKS!

Although she has intellectual and intriguing things to say, her ways of saying them caused me to disrespect her. She is very self righteous and bashes the university whenever she can find the chance. Her assignments are very deep and personal and I don't believe she should be able to pry as much as her assignments allow her to.

An intellectual of the highest level. She will make you uncomfortable, she will challenge you, she will poke fun at you, she will make you laugh, she will make you think in ways you never imagined possible - she is the best. If you're looking for an easy class, scram. If you're looking for intellectual nirvana, this is the absolute last stop.

Amazingly articulate, very thought-provoking professor. If you didn't 'get it' . . . it's not her fault. She's as clear as can be, and worth listening to.

One of the rudest people I've ever come into contact with. Speaks often of her openness and acceptence of all but shows just the opposite. She honestly thinks she invented critical thinking to which I would ask her to think a little more critically.

Honestly, this was an incredibly hard class but really worth my time. It's a grad level class, so if you're looking for an easy A, don't take her classes. I learned so much, and I really enjoyed the challenge of her class - and I got an A in the end b/c I tried. Very timeconsuming but interesting.

Shes rough...at first... but you grow to enjoy her lectures...the most difficult thing was having a prof that frustrated and intrigued you at the same time. It was overall, a perfect combo and i really learned a lot.

Course was useful for qualitative research. I could see where undergrads would find it less useful, but it helped tremendously for my research. Be dedicated to explore her qualitative research methodology.
