Comment:

Not a bad guy, but he would rather be a friend than a professor. Lectures are spent chit-chatting. He tells a lot of jokes that are funny, but come exam time you realize you have no idea what's going on because he never covered the material you're being tested on. Grades you based on how well he likes you, not merit.

This class ruined my streak of getting A's and B's in school. No matter how much you read and study the material. It is very hard to please him on writing assignments even if you have two different English professors proofread it. Overall he is a great person but tough with grading.

straight A student until I got into this class. Extremely tough grader. he will give feedback, but usually long winded and in ways that are hard to understand. He speaks as if his students should be just as knowledgable as he, and is not afraid to upright tell you you're wrong! Even if you're right, he has a better way to say it.

Dr. Donovan is very knowledgeable. However, he seemed to be enthralled by himself, and took advantage of our nearly three-hour class period to drone on and on about random stories from Greece or ancient philosophers. He isn't easy, and expects the best out of his students, but willingly helps them to do well if they want to.

I personally don't understand why he has such a bad review here, the assignments were very easy, all the papers were pretty short (under 2 pages) and as long as you contribute in class discussions, he likes you. I have failed english twice before taking his class, and i passed his class no problem. He can be a harsh grader, though

He teaches from a book he has written and is arrogant about it He doesn't push you or try to help you or push you he simply thinks he is smarter than you Little trick I've learned have three other English profs proof read your papers and say "nice job" and then watch him fail you and tell you your work is crap 00

I cried in his class last week because I was so bored. We spend every class correcting sentences. He wears the same clothes everyday. If there is a hell, it would be Donovan's (excuse me "Daddy's") class. He took a picture of the entire class with our names next to our heads so he could learn our names. I've never felt like my major was so useless.

Would not recommend taking his class. He is unbelievably awkward, and 99.9% annoying. There's 7 books for the class, and if you fall behind on the reading it's impossible to catch back up. The exams are essays and have to be VERY detailed. He wore the same outfit 5 classes in a row...

Awful, awful course. It is ridiculously hard & he does not give an sufficient amount of help. The textbooks (all 8) of them were extremely difficult to read and comprehend. He is very intelligent on this subject, and a lot of others, but seems to think that all of his students are at the same level as he is. He grades very harsh as well.
