I really enjoyed this class because professor Lavelle made it interesting. There is a lot of material that needs to be covered but he tries to help you by being accessible outside class and giving study guides. We had a midterm, a final and a paper. Super sweet professor, I would recommend him

Professor Lavelle is a great lecturer. His tests are hard because there is so much material that is covered. It is mostly fill in questions and answers with a short essay. He is more than willing to help, and super accessible outside of class. He wants you to participate-- so just do it for a few extra points. He is very nice.

Incredibly high-maintenance class for a dude who seems so chill. Took this along with 5 other classes and didn't do well because of it, wouldn't recommend if you're taking other memorization-heavy classes. Very tough grader for exams, wouldn't give us back our term paper until the day of the final because it "shouldn't affect the way we study" -_-

Professor Lavelle is a great professor in my perspective for some people he is tough but most students he is easy. If you do your readings in his class and participate at least once or twice a week you'll end up with a B+ or an A. His exams aren't tough, just require some repetition of the material. And he gives a decent study guide so use that.

Great guy and he truly cares for his students and he brings food to every lecture! He is a tough grader but his exams are relatively easy if you spend some time going over the material. Three books The Iliad, The Odyssey, and Aneid. Three exams, participation matters and he gives reading check quiz type questions which are worth 10%.

Professor Lavelle is an amazing lecturer he has a way to make the lectures interesting. He is a tough grader but it's college literature professors are tough. You read Iliad, The Odyssey, and Aeneid in the same order. Three exams (80% of overall grade); participation (10%), and Reading/Talking points(10%). Follow his directions and you'll be fine.

Dr. Lavelle is an excellent teacher; however, be you have to work hard to get a good grade on this class. He's a tough grader, the kind of teacher I like. He makes you really work for it.

Amazing lecturer and professor, knows his stuff for anything he teaches. It is easy to get intimidated by him at first but he is the nicest guy if you talk to him personally. He is extremely helpful if you have any questions so use his office hours, they are there for a reason! Took five classes with him already, taking one more next semester!

Professor Lavelle is an easy professor to deal with, he has long lectures in which he speak the entire time with very little participation required in class. He gives pop quizzes/participation points in which he would give 3 questions in the beginning of the class and if you miss those you lose participation points. VERY TOUGH TEST GRADER!

He's all about conciseness. That is what can be tough about his class. He will only grade answers that are within the lines provided on a test. He assigns two papers that are no longer than 2 pages long, double spaced. You will have to make your point in as few words as possible. Besides that, he's really an interesting man. 3 books required.

3 books, 3 midterms, 4 out of class writing assignments and 6 in class assignments. Difficult grader but do-able if you do EVERY reading(pop-quiz style in class paragraph writings relevant to readings), go to EVERY class and take notes on EVERYTHING he says. For papers and essays, make sure you have proof from the texts to back up your assertions.

Took Lavelle for Art of Ancient Greece abroad in Greece last summer. He is a very knowledgeable professor who is very passionate about his students obtaining a deeper understanding of the subject at hand. I highly recommend this intersession course if you are lucky enough to be in Rome for a summer term. It was a week long with a midterm and final.

This class has been my favorite CLST class EVER. He is an awesome teacher that knows everything about classics and is very helpful and SUPER understanding. Class is conducted through discussions. There is a term paper and a final exam along with an oral demonstration (very informal and fun). We read everything from Homer to the 4th Century BCE.

Loved him for classical mythology! You can tell he is really an expert in almost every aspect of it. He tells you in class exactly what is going to be on the test pretty much, all you have to do is read most of the time and show up. one paper three exams.

Amazing lecturer. Reading is essential. We get to do an interesting term paper and he is awesome. He's clear, funny, eloquent, informative, and everything a teacher should be. I learned A LOT in his class. Tests are a bit hard, but he's a fair grader and always available for help. He's the reason I'm a classics major.

Dr. Lavelle is a very nice guy, but avoid him for this class. He teaches by telling stories- it's hard to follow especially because he talks so fast. Overall pretty boring class, read the book not it big deal to pay attention to lecture because what he lectures over is only one of two exam questions.3 exams- multichoice, fillins, essay, final paper

Dr Lavelle is awesome! Not only does he know a lot, but he is an awesome and eloquent lecturer. He is a bit of a hard grader, but his class is very manageable. We read the Iliad, Odyssey, and Aeneid and those are the only 3 exams (last one is the final, but not cumulative). In order to get an A just keep up with the reading and go to class.
