Comment:
I took his Modern Thought class based on reviews I'd read, unfortunately it did not meet expectations. Although he is a very kind man, his lectures are poorly planned and boring. I learned some and the exam was easy, but I would not sit through this class again. The work load is minimal, with only one large essay and an exam.

I don't normally rate profs & to give you an idea I've averaged 80s my whole 3 years at Carleton. Would not take this course again. Prof stutters, often forgets his train of thought, and although he's very knowledgeable the class is just poorly executed. His review essay is also KILLER - and I prefer writing essays to exams so that's coming from me

SO here's the thing: the class is pretty interesting HOWEVER the only assignment is a review essay discussing 2 books. This would usually be okay, BUT NO. He gives no in-class instruction about it whatsoever, and I've emailed him multiple times about it and he takes AT LEAST a week to reply to emails. I have no clue how to write this essay.

Quite simply the best professor I've had at Carleton thus far. Author of numerous books, Dr. McKillop is very passionate about what he teaches and extremely knowledgeable; his lectures are both entertaining and enlightening. His "Modern Thought & Culture" class is easily the best damn class I've ever taken and I feel lucky to have been a part of it

The only lectures I have EVER actually enjoyed. He used multimedia frequently and is clearly interested in his topic. Fair grader. He made a calculation in my mark that was in my favour and agreed to split the diffence. Extra 5% of paper worth 40%. He Really shows the value of history.

Took some getting used to, but a fine prof, and very smart. TAs asked him to hand out Powerpoint notes, which helped immensely. Content is abstract but interesting if you really like the study of history. Assignments and exam tough but marked fairly. Just get all the main concepts down and do the readings and you'll be fine.

Very intelligent. Very kind and warm - big heart... but only for those who show they're serious about learning. Was deeply inspired by his classes. Strongly recommend.

This guy should not be teaching...he only knows what he has read from the back of book jackets. When asked a question, he has no clue. But what's worse is he thinks he is a genius. PS - he HATES BHum students.

Very nice person. A lot of information squeezed into lectures, but interesting stuff. More discussion and participation with students should be encouraged. Fair marker and not an overload of work for a third year class. Really enjoyed the ideas presented.
