Ms Polecritti is a spectacular professor, the best i've had in the UC Santa Cruz history department. And she is exactly that: If you are not a history major, or someone who can really visualize and apprecate her lectures (they're very emotional and detailed but no powerpoint due to her good values), then she may not be the prof for you necessarily.

I am a science major and I would not recommend taking this class if you are not a history major. She is very nice but I could not pay attention in lecture for the life of me. Could not read the books because I was not interested at all. TA was picky on my essays and gave me B+ both times. Still was able to get an A- because the exams were easy.

difficult course for a lower div. Had to buy like 7 relatively expensive books and the reading load is intense. Overall, easy exam format, just short in class essays based on terms with two 6 page papers. Like I said, do-able for a history major like myself, but really rough for non-majors and freshman. I think that for a survey, it's a little much

Although I took this course many years ago, and as a science major, I was fascinated and enthralled. Such a large time period to present, but well punctuated with as many primary and secondary sources as possible. One of the few profs I remember well and fondly after nearly 20 yrs. THANK YOU. This was my favorite class at UCSC! The combination of opera woven into the historical themes of Italy makes studying the revolutions and uprisings even more epic. If you don't like opera or are unfamiliar, don't worry! She makes the operas very accessible and I came out of this class loving every one that I watched. I got an A in her class

I was a sociology major and actually decided to take a history minor because of Cindy. She is not only extremely knowledgable about her subject but is a very, very nice person. Her reading lists are immense, but DO read everything because her lectures cover different things. You will need it all to pass the tests and to write competent papers.

While she appears very nice she is incredibly boring and you learn nothing in her lectures. Unless you are interested in hearing about her grad career in Italy do not take the class.

One of UCSC Hist. dept's finest. Her passion is infectious and her empathy towards her students is beaten by no other professor (or person for that matter). Know that she is a supplement, not a textbook, so don't complain about her getting sidetracked; she assigns copious reading for a reason. I've also taken 65A & 164A with her.

She's a very nice person and knows her stuff but the course is never the topic of lecture. She is constantly sidetracked by stories of her life, political rantings, talking about her other courses, etc. I found her lectures to be physically hard to sit through because of it.

Cindy is a credit to the history profession. She cares deeply about her subjects as well as the welfar of her students. She assigns A LOT of reading, but for this class we only had 2 10 page papers, a midterm, and a final, so it was a good amount of work but not overdone. And her experiences are fascinating! Highly recommended!

WONDERFUL class. Take good notes, because most of it is relevant to the exams. Two Essays, one midterm, one final. She doesn't use powerpoints or lecture notes visually, so its important to attend class. lots of reading but not bad if you're totally engaged. GREAT class and GREAT teacher. would recommend to ANYONE interested in Medieval Europe!

This is a FANTASTIC class which really keeps you engaged in the material. Lectures are extremely helpful, and well worth going to. She's VERY animated and enthusiastic when it comes to history. Exams need to be studied for, but are definitely manageable! I would HIGHLY recommend this class & Polecritti to ANYONE with an interest in Medieval Europe!

GREAT professor! Class is very interesting, esp. if you are a history major. Lots of reading, but relevant/helpful as supplementary material for the class. Standard two essay, midterm, and final that I found to be moderately difficult. She doesn't use powerpoints or online resources, however, so you will miss a lot if you don't attend lecture.

Absolutely fantastic! One of my favorite teachers at UCSC. Tests are easy- find 5 places on a map, explain 5 people or events, match 5 key terms to their definitions, and write a short essay response to a passage. Did I mention she gives a study sheet for each test?

Professor Polecritti is very fast paced in her lectures (lectures were not based on powerpoints). Her lecture style is directed more towards upper division students. Her tests are not complicated but active participation in class (office hours and reading) is a must! Very tough class but highly recommended.
