great teacher, great guy. very fair in every way, (so dont turn in papers late, he wont take them), but you know exactly what to expect from him. very difficult, but i learned a ton. very tough grader, but prepares you very well for the next levels of theory. his class is a tough workout, but if you pass, its a good experience.

Great professor, with a great understanding of music theory. The class (theory 1) is very difficult, but a little easier once you get the basics down--lots of quizzes at the beginning of the semester. You will have learned a lot in the end though. His sense of humor makes class a little more fun.

Professor Smith is an amazing teacher. He is not concerned so much with rules as with simply making the music sound good. Expect to spend a good bit of class time reviewing the homework. Proponent of having students put their homework exercises on the board to be evaluated by other students. Once you've settled in, it's quite an enjoyable class.

Smith is cool. Its hard right from the start, but once you get the basics drilled into your head, everything else will go well. If you don't get something - GO TO HIM AFTER CLASS! He will explain it until you get it. He's got a funny sense of humor. If you are on the end of a joke, don't take it personal. He is an amazing prof. Hard, but excellent.

This guy is simply amazing. His knowledge of music theory is incredible, and he does a great job of getting the info drilled into your brain. My favorite class and my hardest class (except for possibly calculus). Definitely take his classes.

smith is great, if you can follow him. if you have a hard time following teachers when they get a little mixed up, you probly wont like his class. i think his teaching methods are the best of the theory department. lots of work, and you better do it if you want to be on his good side. i wish he taught more thoery classes.

He's interesting and nice, but a bad teacher because he's not very intelligent and can't explain concepts well. I mean, if you have a valid point, don't try logical reasoning with him - cause it will just get you on his bad side. it's better to do what he wants than what is right.

The hardest theory teacher at Vanderbilt but the best. You must be prepared to work your butt off, you will thank yourself later. Study in groups, and make friends with theory whizzes to help tutor you if you're not doing well. Block out significant time for homework. He doesn't appreciate slackers. His 'for the longest time' rendition is fantastic

Amazing teacher and person in general. Lots of homework, but it's well worth it just to be in class with a professor who has such a wonderful sense of humor and irony about everything. Be prepared to work and make visible effort at grappling the material actively or he will tear you apart.

class is IMPOSSIBLE and the grading is screwy (though there's a curve in the end. smith does give an excellent basis for future theory and is willing to help as long as you're obviously trying. DON'T GET ON HIS BAD SIDE! SHOW you're making an effort!!!!!!

Picks favorites, not understanding, not helpful, very hard, moves ahead when only 1/2 the class understands. the way in which he collects and grades homework has you turning in 2 assignments before the concept is even discussed in class!!
