Comment:

Dr. Kolmerten is a bit scary, but she's also personable and quite lovely outside of class. But I can see why non-English majors would have a tough time - make sure you really KNOW specific textual details. Some advice: if she says to read any extra essays put on the class website, DO IT. I also second the fact that she's very criticism-oriented.

Dr. Kolmerten is wonderful. She expects you to put in the effort for your grade, but she is willing to help you if you ask. She's passionate about what she teaches and that really shines in her classes. Class discussion is really important and she has a little snark in her, but she truly is a great professor. 100% recommend taking a class with her

An interesting and compelling teacher. She does have (VERY) high expectations and she can be sarcastic, but she will help you and if you do the assignment well you will get the grade which you earn. Not for someone just trying to get through an English class, but for someone who is good at English a great class

If you don't kiss ass she'll put you on her bad list. She spends way too much time talking about herselfherselfherself and all the wonderful amazing experiences she's had and famous people she's met. She drove me crazy. She also puts a lot of emphasis on literary criticsm, instead of a student's own interpretation.

Her Am. Lit class made me decide to be an English major. Her classes are extremely interesting if you enjoy literature. Also, you should be prepared for close reading and critical thinking, because that's what she expects and what she puts on her exams, which are challenging for even the best students.

If you can't spell "me" or "something" you'll be in a boatload of trouble. Her classes are NOT FOR NITWITS. Don't expect an "A" for doing nothing. Go for tutoring if you need help. Expect to read A LOT. Classes are on the level of Princeton or Yale classes. Don't knock her because your high school English teacher didn't prepare you. BTW smarts=HOT.

Dr. Kolmerton was by far the best professor I had at Hood. Yes, she is demanding, but she demands the best. Her ability to lead a student to the answer is inspiring. If you put forth the effort, you will be rewarded. If you expected to breeze in and grab an A, continue to groan.
