if you like the topic, definitely take the class. If not, then this course might be challenging because it has a lot of readings and the class lectures are really long. She's a great teacher and really know what she is talking about but if you have no interest then it's super boring.

Dr. Summers is a difficult teacher but she is very smart and really knows the material. The class discussions are always interesting. She gives a lot of reading homework as well as essays, but if it is a subject you really enjoy it will be worth it. If not, it will be a lot of work.

If you're thinking of taking Epidemics and Empires- prepare yourself. So much reading every night, and quizzes every class. Paper prompts are vague. Dr. Summers is incredibly smart and has interesting lectures, but if you're looking for a science-focused FYS then look elsewhere- this is a history class.

Took her for FYS and the class is extremely hard. She assigns way too much reading. Maybe its because I am a science major, but I do not like this class at all

Professor Summers is an extremely intelligent and she definitely reads a considerable amount. She expects you to do the same and lectures can be boring. She is not the most organized. You may not even know what your grade is until the end of the semester. If you ask her what your grade is she may not know it, even after consulting her notes.

I am glad to have taken Dr. Summers' class! The only qualm I had with the class was the amount of reading assigned. Otherwise, the class was VERY interesting and Dr. Summers' passion for history came through. Even though the topic of the class is not related to my interests, I feel like I understand the world better because of it.

It's true that there's so much reading it's basically impossible to do it all. But she stopped giving reading quizzes by the end of the semester. She's a nice teacher who's definitely passionate about Africa, class discussions and lectures were usually interesting, always willing to help. Grading is really reasonable. You can learn a lot from her.

Don't make the mistake of taking her...worst class of my life. More reading than I've ever done in my life, usually about 100+ pages a night. International Perspectives was more like "Summer's Perspective" she makes you think what she wants. grading is impossible.

There is a ton of reading. Don't let anyone else here fool you, you will read a boatload. She is an expert in her field and incredibly knowledgable, but be prepared for the amount of work that comes with her class. Writing is a little higher than average, but not too bad. I'm writing this review on the eve of the exam. The reading is sooo much.

Summers is very enthusiastic about the subject she teaches. So much so that if your just taking a hist. 100 to fulfill the requirement i'd tell you not to take her for changing africa simply because its more like a case study uganda...lots of reading but interesting for you history majors. really nice too

She's really nice and knows SO much about Africa. There is a ton of reading with lots of discussion (so if you dont like African history don't take this class), which is a problem when people think their comments are worth mentioning just so they can get part. points. Although, part. in discussions makes the class go so much faster.

Women and Gender in Africa: Professor Summers is challenging, but her class is completely worth it if you are willing to put in the effort. She gives a lot of feedback, and although her handwriting is a little sloppy if you can decipher it your writing will improve a lot. Summers is one of the best and mosst interesting teachers at this school.

Yes, Summers is brilliant, but twice I had harrowing experiences in her classes. Her reading assignments are notoriously large, class lecture/discussion is painfully boring, and she always seems to treat students as though they're incredibly stupid. I learned a lot in her Africa class, but being forced into her seminar after another teacher's unfortunate passing was the only thing that kept me from finishing my history major. I will always rue the fact that I ever decided to stay in that seminar.

Very understanding and motivating. I'm not really interested in African history, but the class was definitely worthwhile. Assigns a LOT of reading, but you can get away with not doing all of it. Fair grader as well.

You WILL work for your grade in her classes. You don't have to all the reading but most of them are actually interesting. Participation is key, and makes class fun. Challenging and all-around excellent teacher. She teaches you HOW to learn not just info.
