I had Catherine Lewis for Narrative Techniques, Fiction 1 & will take Fiction Writing 2 with her. She is also my advisor and is so helpful and always there for me when I need her. She is well respected and whatever feedback she gives you on your short stories is important so please listen to her advice. By doing this you really grow as a writer.

Catherine Lewis is a wonderful fiction teacher. I've taken her for both Narrative Techniques and Fiction Writing 1. She is caring about her students and the work, and she takes everyone's comments about each other's work very seriously.

Catherine is kind and helpful, but certainly serious about her class. She loves people who take the subject seriously, and really want to participate and better their work. Sometimes her feedback on writing exercises is a little lacking, so the first half of the semester is a little slow, but the feedback she gives in workshop is really great.

Amazing creative writing professor. There for you, helpful, gives good feedback, interesting, and structured. Although very kind, she is also tough, so do your work, participate, and be attentive and you will have a blast and IMPROVE! She rocks!

Her classes are workshop-heavy, so if you're not into that, you're in for a lot of annoying classes. Otherwise, we don't do a lot of "learning to write"--just writing and getting feedback. It's better for making polished pieces rather than truly effective writing. As a professor, though, Lewis is absolutely unpretentious and a generally sweet lady.

C.Lewis is such a space cadet. Her class drags on bc she is unorganized and lacks time management. She's a nice lady, but pretty useless. However, the novels she picked for Alt. Worlds were pretty interesting.

Ugh-- dull lectures, uninspiring/ unenthusiastic professor who shows little to no interest in her students or in teaching. The class moves so slowly bc she just seem to care to engage students. Where is the passion for the subject? The creative spark? A dull teacher and an even duller class. And worst of all, basically your only option for fiction

As a CWR major, I see a lot of Catherine Lewis. She's also my advisor. She gets a lot of flack. She's invested in the craft and always has good insight. Her lectures are often spontaneous, workshops are structured but beneficial. At times (but rarely) she seems stressed, though, and as a result doesn't read student work as closely as she should.

She doesn't really seem to teach, mostly just give us writing exercises, have us read them out loud, and then say "uh huh". When we workshopped our short stories she was very helpful, but other than that she seemed to just dismiss a lot of things her students say.

I don't know how to feel about Catherine. She is an alright teacher, nothing more, nothing less. My biggest problem is as a creative writing student you were stuck with her a she seemed to teach every fiction workshop available. And then when I actually did need her for help with my senior project she was on sabbatical.

I took narrative techniques with her and I'm not really sure what to think. I have nothing against her personally (she's a very nice person), but her classes could be excrutiatingly boring and slow and I was never crazy about her teaching method. I don't know if I learned anything of real value in her class.

I took several creative writing classes with Catherine Lewis. I have nothing against her personally, but I eventually left the CWR program because of her. It wasn't necessarily that she was a bad teacher, but just that after 2 or 3 classes I realized I wasn't learning how to WRITE, I was learning how to write in a style that she liked. I think once you go past the basics, the rest is subjective and can't be taught. She was a good teacher, but I would have preferred a rotating group of teachers.

Catherine and I did not get along for 3 years at Purchase- we actively disliked each other and I hated her teaching methods. But in Senior Colloquium, I finally grew to like and respect her, and understand her somewhat harsh methods.
