I took his class in 1992, it was a hoot! I agree with a lot of the comments made, but have to add that he always tried to make math appealing, which made me enjoy math despite my mediocre grades. He had such enthusiasm for the subject, you didn't fall asleep and you felt it was worth attending the class.

Charles is a really nice guy, somewhat funny, and wants to help you learn. Unfortunately he is not very organized, he has bad hand writing, and lacks strong communication. He assigns a lot of homework and his tests are difficult but he grades fairly and generously. If you want to learn a lot your better off choosing a different professor.

This guy is brilliant. Don't sit in the back of the room, sit in the font and you will benefit from the uniqueness of his lectures. Also, attend office hours and ask him about his violin.

You can't help but love the guy, and he is a truly excellent mathematician. The homework load is ridiculous, and forget trying to read his writing, but still a great experience.

First of all, he does grade on a curve which is nice. However, I had a hard time understanding him in class. He has a thick german accent, and he writing is just as hard to comprehend. He writes kinda small on the chalk board and has a shaky hand. Also hand writes answers to tests and then photocopies them so I couldn't decipher those.

Lectures are somewhat confusing, but the missed portions can be figured out with the book. Tests are manageable, but occasionally have trick questions. Be sure to understand the fundamental concepts thoroughly. Will grade on a generous curve. Overall, one of the best math profs at PSU, and would take a class from him again.

This professor is obviously past his prime as a teacher. However, he is a jolly nice guy more than happy to try answering your questions (usually successful). Lectures are survivable if you work ahead on the hw problems. Also very generous with your final grade: I got an A with high 70s/low 80s on tests!

I will be honest. If you seriously need to learn Calc 4 for future purposes, you won't learn too much. If you simply need to pass this class to move on to more applicable/serious endeavors then trust me you will pass! Two tests, 20% homework, and a final. (Exams curved). Has a sense of humor, and asks if "you understand, yes!?" Rotate your gears!!

Charles Balogh is the best math professor I have had, I bearely learned a thing, I failed every test, turned in half the homework because it was too much to handle with all my other coursework, and got a B+, how do you top that?

Wow. This class was weird. The amount of homework assigned was ridiculously large. The handouts given out in class required half the trees in Oregon to be chopped down for the paper. You might think that you're going to fail half way through, but if you stick it out, do the majority of the homework, and get a %30 on the final, you'll pass.

I was concerned with the grade I had in the class the whole term but was at the same level of the class, I finally got the nerve to ask the guy and was greatly relieved walking into the final. The only thing I wish had gone differently was if I had gone in to see him during his office hours more. He always had the class laughing.

This guy knows his calculus- loves theorums and solving challenging problems. However, he is getting old, so expect minor mistakes (forgot to add 1, etc). I loved his Hungarian accent. He was extremely helpful, even postponed a midterm once, and students were always in his office before class.

I took calculus from Charles Balogh in the late 1960s. I still remember his class. He was great!! I learned some calculus in this class; but I also learned a great deal about teaching math from him - and this has helped me a great deal over the years.
