This was my first time taking a class with Charles and I absolutely loved it! He made his lectures very interesting and entertaining (I actually wanted to come to class in the morning!). There were a lot of assignments, but they were very easy and did not take very long to complete. If you can, take one of his classes!

You can probably pass without going to class and only reading the textbook, however you can also avoid reading the textbook by going to class. Charles is very engaging and really wants his students to succeed. He's a Harvard graduate and well respected in his field. He's hilarious and devoted to his work, you can tell he loves his job. Take him.

This course was one of the best electives I've taken (Comp Sci major). Charles is an engaging and informed professor, lectures are dynamic and interesting. Work load is high and you absolutely must read the textbook if you want to succeed. It is not a difficult course per-se but requires more work than the average 200 class

Engaging lecturer who is passionate about the subject and really knows how to TEACH it to novices! Subject is very interesting and very much appealed to my philosophy background, even though philosophy appears to be somewhat out of favour with linguists. But this subject matter is a philosphical outlook based on scientific study. Excellent course

Engaging lectures, good sense of humour, responds well to people who ask questions. Like others have said, you can tell he's passionate about the subject matter and he's excited for us to learn about it. Also, in spite of the workload, I kind of enjoyed the assignments? They never felt like filler; I always learned something from them.

This class was taught very well, the lectures are worth going to. Charles keeps things interesting and fun and explains the main ideas very clearly in class. His marking isn't super hard and as long as you understand the main concepts you'll do good. He is very approachable and always willing to explain something over again until you understand it.

I have had Charles Reiss for both Ling222 and Ling373, and he is was absolutely an amazing prof!!! He makes learning fun, and he actually made me look at the world differently through taking both of these courses!!! Although some people may criticize his teaching style, I absolutely love it!! Schools should have more professors like him!!!

Charles is clearly very passionate about the subject and in trying to make sure his students really understand the information. There is A LOT of work, homework and reading expected of the students, but it is all relevant and ranges from mildly interesting to very interesting. Attending class is a must, as is putting in 100% on all homework.

Undoubtedly a poor choice to lead a class on the most tantalizing subject we can be studying in the here and now. His method of teaching actually wires his students into disbelieving the information he presents to the class (if you've taken 222 and are a critical thinker, I think you know exactly what I'm talking about).

The course is interesting, but you have to listen and follow the lectures. He makes linguistics easy to understand. He knows most people are taking the course as an elective so he find examples out of every day things to make you understand better. Good teacher, very helpful. There is homework but it's easy and helps you understand a lot.

I took this class as an elective and after taking it I would not recommend it to anyone. The subject matter is beyond a 200 level course and he bombards you with assignments (1-2 a week). There is also a text book and a bunch of other articles you are expected to read which are extremely confusing. I would avoid this class at all costs!!

Charles is a great professor. He is very interested in the subject, and it's clearly his passion. He is extremely knowledgeable and is very easy to approach with questions. There are many small assignment throughout the semester, but nothing too difficult. As long as you attend the lectures and do the readings you are guaranteed a good grade!
