Assigns a wide variety of excellent books from ALL parts of the political spectrum, and doesn't allow his politics to stand in the way of recognizing great literature (more Davis professors should be like this). Perfectly happy to have disagreements, as long as you can defend your viewpoint. Not an easy A, but fun if you enjoy the subject.

I don't agree with all his views (his ideas about the comparative racial prejudice of Westerners are, in my opinion, a little one-sided), but, unlike most of the professors I've had at Davis, has an obvious and real enthusiasm for his subject, and doesn't always seem as if he'd rather be elsewhere. The class isn't effort-free, but it's worth it.

Chang is an insightful instructor, and very intelligent. He really wants students to participate in the class. Since I don't participate much, I did a presentation instead. Novels are interesting. Many times, he would talk about nothing to make sure we didn't leave class early. But just pay attention and write notes, & you will be fine.

Usually considered a hard class, he made it easier for the class to comprehend the material from the reader. Very worldly, insighful and intelligent professor. Recommended to anyone who enjoys discussing your thoughts during class!

Definitely one of the best professors I've taken a class from in Davis. Note: he gives our very few A's, but the trick to getting an A is to VISIT HIS OFFICE HOURS. He is incredibly helpful, and although it is true that he is very opinionated, he will take the time to converse with you about the books read in class. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

hands down THE BEST lit teacher I've EVER had, first one I actually visit in office hours, very opinionated but completely open to other opinion, he may seem to disregard your opinion but it's actually more about not enough time to cover all material so he had to move on quick, and his views are interesting and acknowleges other views, grades fair

I took him for 4th year Japanese and it was a good class overall. We'd go off into some asides on the material to hear his personal beliefs once in a while, but mostly focused on class material. He works to the pace of the class, so heavily encouraged if you can keep up with the reading.

Professor Chang is an overall good teacher. He is very opinionated, but that isn't a bad thing. The subject matter is very interesting and I think he does a good job conveying the information. There are 3 papers, a midterm, and final and I believe he grades fairly. I really enjoyed this class.

Comment:
Intelligent professor with in-depth knowledge of Japanese literature. Excessive criticisms on class participation and class performance on exams. Not very open to opinions; will ask for input, but will disregard it, as most suggestions are "not his style" in grading or teaching methods. Does not seem to foster comfortable learning environment.

Very smart teacher. Interesting lectures. Midtem and final seemed hard to study for but was actually easy. He seems to be a tough grader, but he actually grades pretty easily. His views are very interesting.

LOVED the class! Extremely interesting, the professor ties in tons of other relevant subjects and makes the literature worthy of reading. Really gives a different point of view on tired old topics. I can't believe I actually look forward to a 2-hour lecture, twice a week.

He's a very nice person and it's easy to get an A in the class as long as you participate and nail the midterm and final exams. But his lectures and the reading material aren't very interesting and it's difficult to understand.

I've actually had Professor Chang for several courses and he is a wonderful professor. He is wholly professional in his classes and has the kind of nowledge that leaves students with the feeling that they're learning from somebody who is truly talented.

Some movies got a little boring. Midterm and final are kinda hard. Final was a LOT of writing...But as long as you listen enough in lecture and watch all the movies with enough attention, an A is easily attainable.
