Comment:
Writing Poetry is a difficult but rewarding course. The only grade you receive is for your final portfolio, so it can be very stressful to not have any indication of your grade. I don't find Bakken to be arrogant as other reviewers have said. He has always been very kind to me. He is funny and very skilled at discussion. Class is always interesting

DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR if youre interested in being treated like a colleague. he likes to point out how much smarter and more traveled he is than you. also he'll assign reading of things that he's written himself, which is just odd in a discussion class

DO NOT take any of his classes except workshops if you arent an english maj. in a LIT CLASS this semester we wrote OVER 100 pages in essays, and he assigns extra reading onto an already full syllabus most nights. youll learn aLOT. hes very arrogant. he called his students "trite" to me. VERY hard grader & im one of the more successful students.

Bakken is an arrogant man, be assured. But he also knows his stuff. I learned a lot in his poetry class, and he is a very cultured person (he'll be sure to let you know). At times he really irks me and at others he's perfectly decent. He is brutally honest, and sometimes has a set style of poetry he promotes. Take this class if you can take crit.

I loved Professor Bakken. Extremely helpful, very smart. I went into the class hearing that he was incredibly arrogant, but I thought, for the most part, he was down to earth and taught very well, trying to communicate all the points to the class. My writing got a lot better--highly recommended.

DO NOT take this class if you're not interested in english for a major/minor. The amount of work can get to be pretty ridiculous and Bakken is a VERY TOUGH grader. If you love english and voicing your opinion, then you will do well. If not, then prepare to not do so well. Also don't take it if you're pre-med. It isn't worth the time and effort.

Don't take english 200 with him if you are not an english major. It's a lot of work and if you're not an english major it will just seem extremely tedious, there are journal entries due every class. He's also a very hard grader.

Amazing professor. This is what a college English class should be like. If you put the work in, you'll get back more than you ever imagined. He really knows how to get you thinking and he also has an uncanny ability to bring the texts alive.

Not helpful if you are not an English major. I couldn't get into his Jr. Seminar, and it's necessary for graduation. He's brilliant and insightful, but his arrogance ruins the class. Very arrogant.
