Comment:
Not as difficult as a lot of other courses in the science majors, but the material can be really dense at times. Calvert can sometimes make the material a lot more difficult than it really is. If you pay attention to class, go to OH, and take some time every day out of your schedule to practice drawing out the cycles, you should do really well

One of the hardest, toughest, most difficult series I've ever taken, but Calvert is an amazing professor who is very fair. Basically if you put in some amount of work, you are guaranteed to pass the class. Calvert does indeed go by his lecture very quickly, and sometimes it's very easy to get lost because he'll ramble on about different concepts.

Have an 8am, MTWRF class isn't easy, but Calvert makes it survivable with his energy. Tests are hard, and test your understanding. Memorize, and understand; trying just the former will not work. Know the "story." Tests are short answer and you need to know everything to get all yours points. Go to class, every day; he moves fast.

Very good professor. It takes a little time to warm up to him. He is hilarious and very honest. By the end of the quarter, we all loved him. This is a hard class and you will have to know a lot for the tests, but it is worth it. Calvert is awesome

This class can be difficult and the lecture time (not to mention the fact that it's everyday) can be a bit of a bummer but if you show up and pay attention, you will not fail. Calvert is also pretty funny professor and if you are Animal Science major, there's a possibility of working with him.

He can lecture very fast. The first midterm will be hard, but the rest of the course should be better once you know what to expect. Really wants everyone to do well. Show up, try, and you won't fail.

There's nobody I'd rather have early class with than Calvert. He's entertaining and straightforward. He messes up sometimes, but you can generally sort out the truth by thinking through the concept. If you can put it all together like he does, the class is totally doable. A lot of work, though. Best taken with friends, you'll bond over it.

Great class in which I learned a lot! I liked Calvert's teaching style... he does work on the board so it's not just clicking through power point. Tests are difficult but he curves the hell out of the grades so it's okay!

His notes are sloppy and he gets things wrong-the T.A's try to correct him in office hours but sometimes they don't know what he's talking about either. There's a massive curve on all tests and final grades which is nice of him. Be prepared to work your butt off for this class-lots of memorizing and trying to understand what Calvert's talking about

His lectures are confusing as all hell and completely disorganized most of the time. That being said, I never recorded his lectures and only ever started studying for his exams about 2 days before the test and I got A's and B's on all his tests BEFORE the massive curve. It seems daunting at first, but it is VERY hard to fail this class.

Ah, I miss Calvert already! I enjoyed 103 more than 102, because there were less thermo/enerG stuff. Honestly, I'm glad to have taken 102/103 instead of the BIS series. I actually learned and retained a lot from this class and I won't ever forget it. If you care about learning, you won't regret ABI series with Calvert. Go to OH, Jesse's awesome

Oh my goodness NO! I mean, you don't really have a choice if you're an animal science/clinical nutrition major, but wow... everyone who says "he's an entertaining teacher," well I'd rather have a teacher who teaches the correct material and has helpful class notes. The lectures are so unorganized and confusing!

Both ABI 102 and 103 were two of my favorite classes on campus. Calvert makes 8am class enjoyable and has a very distinct teaching style that I personally loved. This is a class that you need to really stay on top of, but doing really well is not out of reach.

not sure what the poster below is talking about, i'm not aware of any sob story but definitely calvert is a reasonable prof. i know his teaching style might not be for some people, but for me, he focused on the important concepts rather than rote memorization, which i really like about him! biochem got way more enjoyable for me becus of him :)

One of the most confusing and uninspiring teachers I have ever had. Horrible attitude and makes the material seem impossible. I wondered how he is still a professor and then on the last day of class he gave a sob story and made the class pity him before we filled out the class evaluations.

Fortunately passed this class with a barely acceptable grade since his lectures were quite confusing. He talked fast and changed his mind often so it's hard to take notes. He was a bit mad when lecturing, which made me not comfy. Feel bad for having to take his class again next quarter. Textbook was required but he never used, don't buy.

Hes pretty entertaining during class. He gets pretty excited about the subject sometimes, which makes him talk and write on the board VERY fast. He also jumps around quite a bit and makes tons of errors on the chalkboard, making note taking difficult. Overall, the class is pretty easy to pass as long as you can memorize the notes. Don't buy book!

I miss Calvert! Probably the only science class you will have at UCdavis where the teacher actually uses a chalk board. He makes the subject fun and inspired me to research on my own. The txt book is extremely useful and past tests if you can get your hands on them. If you study like an hour everyday it will come easier and you won't have to cram.
