I have to say his class might be a little bit boring, but he is a really wonderful person. Always very thoughtful and give you some extra time for doing your paper. Absolutely love his class.

Boring, dry, useless. Supposed to be an Introduction to Asia--um, what? Nothing here. Way too many guest lectures, nothing holding the course together. Book reports, like in high school.

Like other people have said on here, he's very difficult to listen to. His voice is monotone. I don't absorb much from his lectures. The entire course was based on long readings. It's evident that he is incredibly knowledgeable, but he lacks social skills. On the other hand, he ALWAYS makes time to talk with students in his office, which is superb.

Excellent professor. You will get out of this class as much as you put in. Dr. Morgan has helped improve my essays a million times over, really knows his stuff, cares, and inspires. A bit odd, but a small class in worth taking. One of the best profs at uvic. HIGHLY recommend.

Comment:
The theory learned in this class is genuinely interesting, but he is the kind of prof who will only give really good marks to those who can give him exactly what he wants to hear. Not interested as to whether you are able to apply the theory to your own area of interest, just wants you to spit it back, word for word.

If you ever want to learn sociopolitical theory, Morgan is the master. He lays different schools out in a way which is clear, easy to understand and to build a strong theoretical base to launch into upper level classes from. Easy going on due dates but don't try and push your luck too hard. If you want to learn theory, take his class first.

Morgan simply is what he is: an oddity. The only teacher on the South Pacific in a department that could not possibly care less about the region. Friendly and genuine, but not highly sociable. Extremely experienced, but now mostly a theorist. He's a strange fellow. That said, he's worth taking a class with. Just know what you're getting into.
