Comment:

I can understand a lot of the poor reviews on here, but once I understood what her teaching style was like it was much easier to understand what was expected from me. She was always available outside of class for extra assistance, which fortunately brought much clarity to subject matter. Make no mistake though, her tests are brutal.

Comment:

Although Dr. Marvin is quite the expert in her field, teaching is not her expertise. She does not use lecture slides, and her speech is usually difficult to structuralize. One-on-one, she is very informative, but in class, it is very difficult to keep focused on the topic.

She is extremely helpful outside of lectures, but the lectures themselves... yikes. She goes 5 minutes over class time for every class. It's clear she loves the material she's teaching about, only she loves words as well, and creates extremely wordy explanations that are sometimes hard to follow.

She's a VERY sweet old lady (minus her ridiculously hard exams), but just not a good speaker. Forget the anthropology, bring a pillow. Actually, there's really no need to go to lectures, online notes and textbooks are definitely all you need. It's fun to count how many times she says "As it were" though.

She is the worst prof I've had to date. She is incomprehensible, and boring in the lectures. I'm sure that she knows a lot about music, but there is a sever deficiency when it comes to her lecturing skills. I ended up staying home and taking notes from the book instead of going to class - that was way more useful.

It may take a while to adjust to her at first. She is fair and caring toward the class. If you ask a question, she will try her best to explain, even though she uses big words and it's sometimes hard to follow. It's obvious that she's a genius and knows music history through and through. Watch out for her tests though... you have to study hard!

She's not a very engaging professor, which is too bad, because she is very well educated and clearly knows what she's talking about. While the structure of her class is well set up, there is no further discussion outside of what the textbook has already stated. Overall she is monotonous, over articulate, unengaging and just overall boring.

Marvin is one of the best profs I have had, her knowledge of music history is unbelievable. It takes some time to adjust to her, but she challenges us to think outside the box. However, you had better know you're stuff for her tests, or even the bell curve won't help you!

By far the worst professor I have ever had. Very unclear - rambles and goes onto unrelated tangents. Phrasing of questions is obscure and extremely convoluted. Amount of knowledge she expects us to assimilate is far beyond reasonable. She has done the impossible: made me dislike some facet of music

Dr. Marvin is a fantastic prof. It took awhile to grow accustomed to her teaching style, finally a prof who doesn't just repeat what it in the text book, but she adds so much insight. Liked her classes so much that I sought out courses she taught.
