I found her to be extremely clear in her expectations and very helpful. She left no doubt in my mind what she expected--listen to her instructions and follow them-you will do well. Emails were always answered promptly. Yes, there is a lot of work involved with writing and practicing your speeches but if you do what she asks,you should do well.

The course involves the student to do a lot of speaking in front of classmates. Very helpful in teaching how to speak in front of audiences. Thought the instructor could provide more in depth criticism to each student, but overall simple formatted class highly recommended

Interestingly, I am a man but earned an "A". If you go to class and LISTEN, I don't know how you could do anything but succeed. Her expectations seemed pretty clear to me. She seemed to always begin a critique with something positive. Writing, timing, and delivering a speech a week isn't easy but maybe we should remember, this is COLLEGE!

Worst experience I've had so far at CMU. Favorites are assisted and lead to an A grade while others are only criticized. If your opinion or evaluation of a reading contradicts hers or is not mainstream, you're not going to do well. There really are right and wrong answers. Stay AWAY and maintain your GPA.

This class was an aweful experience, and I gained nothing from it. The teacher is ruthless in her critique of your speaking performance (especially if you are male), expecting you to perform at a professional level in front of the class (while reading childrens books in character, etc). Doing your best is not good enough, you must be perfect.

I liked Professor Gillman and thought she made Literature interesting and fun. Attendance is mandatory if you want a good grade. I was nervous getting up to do the performances but was better by the end. Easy class and I would recommend it to anyone.

Attendence is a must. This is a performance class, if your not comfortable standing in front of class don't take it. She is very knowledgable. Will let you go early. She will also critize you in front of the class if you can't take it stay away, but it's helpful info.

I have to agree with others that this was the worst class that I've ever taken. The woman stated on day one that she has no life other than this class and it shows. I found her comments to be rude, demeaning and of no help to me. Reading a kid's book to the class and using voices is NOT the same as being in a board room. She fails to realize that.

She will have her favorites, and no matter how they do she will grade them well I got a B but this poor girl in my class did much better then I did and she gave her a D.... Then graded a assignment down because she had never heard of the author I choose.....

She is a good teacher, don't listen to the others. If you follow her instructions, you will do fine. I got an A in the class and barely did any work at all. It's a good class to take, she teaches you alot of skills that we all need in the work force. Take the class, I really liked her and had no problems at all. I actually enjoyed the class.

This was the worst proffesor & class so far at CMU! I agree with the others, she is rude & treats students with no respect! She states there are no wrong answers on homework but yet marks you down if she doesn't like your answer. If you enjoy being humiliated, degraded & made to feel ignorant & imcompetent then take this class!

I am an honors student. This is by far the worst experience I've had @ CMU to date. Her syllabus says that you can miss 1 class. I chose the last one, as the written exam is given prior. What she failed to mention was that the last class was MANDATORY. I now have INC. She teaches high school and she treats us as if we were. Intolerable.

Irrespective of other comments, I found this class to be fairly easy. The last assignment is the most challenging, but the rest of the material and limited homework were a breeze. I found her in-class criticisms justified and had no problem with her style. If you go through her class, you will be a better speaker in public settings.

This teacher is the worst in history. This class should have been fun. This instructor is constantly jumping in individuals faces and tearing them down like their a two year old. Overall pretty easy and a good course, but I did not appreciate her verbal critiques in front of the entire class. I felt that she expected way too much practice on the oral presentations. Working people do not have that much time to spend rehearsing to read children’s books and poetry.
