Once came to class in a giant cat costume. Seriously. Someone asked him a question after class and he meowed at them. That should really tell you everything you need to know.

Uses theory informed by bad postmodern philosophy whose verbiage is thick to disguise that it isn't saying anything. He may care about the material but not about teaching. Do not get letters from him. Mine was all praise, but filled with misspellings, and no punctuation or capitalizations. I guess he forgot what applying to grad school was like.

He's very into certain anthropological theories and brings an enthusiasm about them to class (and in discussions afterward). Not easy to follow a dense convo with him, but he knows his thing and you just have to admit to him you don't so he'll explain it. I was the only anthro major in my class and I loved him.

I did not think he was as bad as people make him out to be. I was looking forward to taking his People and Cultures of East Asia class, but now it's being taught by a Japanese lady who won't return my emails. Anyway, I've had much worse teachers than him (any one in the science department) and at least he made class interesting.

DON'T take this class or any other course he may be teaching. He is unhelpful outside of class and extremely boring. He likes hearing his own voice, isn't open to student's ideas, and is a random and harsh grader. While he may be a well intentioned person- stay AWAY from his classes! Absolutely frustrating and a waste of time.

He may be brilliant (I have my opinion as to how much is just big words and hot air rather than real knowledge) but he cannot teach. Extremely unclear and gives difficult reading that he does not adequately explain. Talk to him outside of class but don't take his classes.

Very enthusiastic about the subject and very knowledgeable, but has trouble dumbing down what he is trying to say so that students can understand. A fair amount of reading that supplements lectures well.

Hatfield uses a manageable (though often highly technical and certainly rigorous) reading load to examine from an array of perspectives the study of "culture". Lectures pare down and incorporate the readings into thematic units that both posit and annihilate a position, creating a mindblowing intellectual squaredance that may turn off some folks.

massive amount of reading material; there are pop quizzes and random assignments plus weekly group works but none of these add to the course at all. he posts up his lecture slides on blackboard, but the lectures themselves are often unclear and difficult to remember come exam time.

This is the worst teacher I've ever had. I love Cultural Anthropology, and this is still one of the least enjoyable courses I've ever taken. I find it difficult to understand how he got this job and how he is keeping it.

I wanted to take this class so badly at first, but after add drop period ended I knew I was in a bind...THIS CLASS SUCKS. Unless you plan on looking up every word of his lectures in a dictionary, STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS. I thought this would be an easy lecture class, but even by doing the tedious reading, you will fail. This class is aweful.

The material for this class is really interesting, but some of the readings can be complicated. There are times when he has problems getting his point across, but he's certainly not a hard grader as our class midterm avg. was a B, and many people got A's. Amusingly Eccentric.

i was really excited about taking this class but after a few weeks i quickly regretted my decision. expect a load of challenging reading. he's extremely difficult to understand (carry a dictionary to class with you to translate his lectures into understandable english) and a hard grader. this is definitely not an intro course.

This is an intro class, but not in the conventional sense. This course presents various approaches to ethnography, conceptions of culture, etc, and then tears them apart with challenging readings. Nothing is assumed, and no departmental dogma is instructed. Anthropology is a work in progress, and this class makes this very, very clear.
