Dan's great. He works you hard because that's how you become a good writer. Great assignments, great feedback, works hard to create a comfortable class atmosphere. Suggests workshops are "spending time in each other's worlds" and also he has a kick ass dog. Sometimes he cries while reading in class because he cares about words, people, dogs, etc.

A brilliant writer, and what's more, a truly excellent professor. I learned so much from his feedback and guided workshops, and I've grown leaps and bounds under his wing. Oberlin's so lucky to have someone like him on staff. Great guy, all around, and really cares about his students.

Completely reinvigorated my love of the creative writing workshop. Wonderful sense of humor. You get the sense Dan not only cares, but is open to learning from his students. The assignments in this class forced me to write in ways I hadn't before, and we were encouraged to experiment, not be perfect writers.

BEST PERSON EVER. Class with him feels like a group conversation about creative expression with a man who just has more experience with writing than most people in the room. Takes your opinions seriously and is genuinely interested in what you have to say. Also, hilarious. Also, best person ever.

The best workshop I've ever had. Dan offers extremely helpful advice on your writing, he's interested and available. Sweetly awkward, but wants the best for his class. Sometimes asks for a lot of work, but that's the way you learn. Good taste in readings.

Occasionally decides randomly to lose your work and stand you up for appointments, but for the most part he's fairly decent. He like the rest of the department isn't too helpful with improvement, but he's really good at pointing out faults. People seem to love him or despise him, there is no real middle ground.
