He's super passionate about history and lets you know what his opinion is. Can sometimes be funny, but lectures are usually pretty dry. Grading is pretty easy if you're not a clueless freshman

I've taken three classes now with Dr. Schlafly and wish I had room in my schedule to take him again. He knows so much about Eastern Europe and Russia through his travels and studies and imparts that knowledge on us in the course.

Expects participation in lecture, will call on you. Gives everything for a paper/test or discussion at least 4 days in advance. He is old school. GO TO OFFICE HOURS, it will get you his respect, and TURN IN DRAFTS OF PAPERS EARLY for revision. He grades very particularly. More intense discussion on readings/text during second half of course.

Grade was based on three papers and three essay examinations. He gives you questions extremely similar, if not identical, to the essay questions at least a week in advance. He will give you a comprehensive review of what you need to fix on your papers if you go into office hours. Know your stuff, he is big on participation. Overall, would recommend

Dr. Schlafly is very passionate about what he does; making it a little difficult to get a long with him sometimes. Dates are very important to him, as is writing with clarity. On test, write as much as possible. On papers, do not stray from the sources and use ample citations to back up your points.

He defiantly knows what he is talking about but classes can be a little dry. 3 papers and 3 tests but he will edit drafts for the paper and gives you the essay questions for the test in advance. He loves dates though and wants tons of them in your essay questions.

He is very intelligent and super interesting. You must read for class and he requires attendance. Tests are tough but he gives you the questions beforehand. He will also read your essay if you give it to him early... DO THIS!! It almost guarantees you an A.

Lots of reading, but he keeps the class interesting. 3 papers and 3 tests. Do the papers early and make sure to send them to him for editing, which is very helpful.

If you take his class, make sure to read material before coming to class. During lecture, Dr. Schlafly speaks very fast and softly, and it is often difficult to understand him. Write all papers early and send him your rough drafts. He will grade all of your rough drafts ahead of time and that will help you earn A's on your papers. Good luck!

His lectures can be a bit scattered and unhelpful, but he also offers a lot of help with essays and tests. With papers, DO NOT try to use writing principles to make it sound good because he wants them to be bare bones facts with a little bit of analysis. He also edits drafts, WHICH YOU SHOULD DO. He sends out review questions for each test.

You must attend class! I did the readings every now and then and the occasional assignments and got a B+. I don't feel like I did much work. Professor is very clear and provides a great deal of insight. He tells personal stories to supplement readings. Overall, good professor, not that hard, but I did learn a lot more than I came in with.

Overall, I thought it was a so-so class. On the one hand, he allows you to turn in papers early; he'll give them back to you with comments, so it's hard to get a bad grade. On the other hand, he looks for VERY specific dates when grading tests; he also expects you to write three essays in 50 minutes while including vast amounts of information.

He is one of those teachers who feels he needs to validate an easy class by grading hard. I study for the tests and include numerous dates and good arguments in my essays but he will find an extremely specific piece of information that he arbitrarily decides should be included and uses it as an excuse to lower your grade.

Good teacher. He may be a bit dry at times, but he definetly knows his stuff. Those who find his class always boring are probably less engaged than they should be. It is not a discussion based class, but he does teach well. Do the reading, he can be condescending if he knows you haven't. Overall good prof.

No matter how you slice it, the man is brilliant. He has both a ton of real world knowledge and academic credentials. If you take advantage of the help he offers, it's hard not to get at least a B on his tests and papers. (He'll mark up your papers for you as many times as you want before the due date!) I love his class and will be taking him again

I took Eastern Europe with Schlafly. He rates well in the standards above. I suspect Dr. Schlafly of unfair grading. If he does not like you, he will grade your tests and paper harder than the students he likes. I do not trust him.

Had Dr. Schlafly for Eastern Europe. He's one of the most intelligent people you will ever meet. The class starts out slow but definitely picks up in the second half of the semester. The one major drawback to his classes is that he doesn't offer a breakdown of how much the papers and tests are worth in the class. Still, great professor

Had him for Russia Pre-1905 and Post-1905. Both great classes. Did not use the textbook much except for reference; almost all that you need to know to do well he tells you in class. Tells plenty of bad jokes, but he thinks they are funny, which makes it hard not to laugh anyway. The novels he chose for the classes were insightful and enjoyable.

He's pretty boring, definitely not an honors class you want to take, especially for a non-major. Class is pretty straightforward, lots of writing on tests and papers. Knows his stuff and drills it into you. Take good notes and you can survive. He can be funny every now and then, but overall I'm a pre-med/math major and would not recommend it.
