Comment:

Professor Sutherland knows the subject on which he is discussing, but he is a soft speaker and rather boring to listen to. He doesn't have many grades, and the ones he does have are graded very critically. Must know the specifics--dates and names. My advice is don't take him. Must go to class and force yourself to listen to boring lectures.

Comment:

One of the best lecturers I've ever had. He explains things in a way that are thorough, but could be understood by a 12 year old. Come to class and study your notes. You'll have to work, but he is fair.

Had him for Civil War. I really liked him for the most part. However, I was pretty irritated after I made A's on on every test, the lowest being a 90 but mid-A's after that, but the paper was graded a low B and I made a B in the class because of it. Others agreed, it wasn't a B paper, or at least a low B :). Maybe he doesn't like having A's?

He really knows what he is talking about and makes it interesting to learn. He is very old fashioned, but I learned to appreciate the simplicity. His tests are easy if you go to class and study. The book is only used for small written quizzes done at home through the semester, but not used for daily reading. If you show up you'll do just fine.

He is a nice man. With that said his tests are ridiculous and his class is boring. The class is run way too old school, nothing online and its going to class and listening for and hour and a half.

Show up to every class and take good notes. if you memorize the notes for the test you'll be fine. make sure to know names of important people. some questions on test are out of the book and not discussed in class. kinda difficult, I studied fairly hard and only made a B

Excellent excellent teacher. Really knows his stuff but his tests are difficult so it is a must to study several days in advance. Grades hard on the essays, he wants a lot of information. Definitely going to take another class from him and I cannot wait for it to happen.

Good teacher. No HW or outside reading is required as some others have stated below. Lectures are somewhat long, but if you pay attention, you will get a good grade because the tests are from the notes with a take home essay as part of the test. He is just a little picky about his test answers but he is generous with his partial credit. RECOMEND

OMG. If you like history this class will blow your hair right back. Tons of reading and hour and a half lectures will be reaaaal enjoyable lol. He knows his history and he is able to explain everything to you. His tests on the other hand are difficult with lots of studying without a study guide. GL

He was very helpful. I got a C on the first test, and he came to me and told me i could do better. At the end of the year, i had an A minus.
