I don't write reviews but Dr. Devine deserves it. He is an incredible professor and probably the best lecturer I've ever had. He's ridiculously smart but also dorky and approachable. His exams are detail oriented but if you pay attention in lectures, go to review sessions, and have a genuine interest for the class, you will do well.

Dr. Devine was a very interesting and cool professor and I definitely enjoyed the class. It wasn't 100% hard science and he also incorporated some psychology and anthropology into the course, which made it very interesting. His exams are VERY tough and specific. Read the slides carefully. He gives some XC, but a 93 is still an A, but I got a 91.

Really sparked my interest in neuroscience, and his lectures are pretty interesting but he does go VERY fast and you do need to read the textbook to pass in my opinion. It is possible to get an A with a lot of hard work and preparation, not easy at all but the subject matter is very interesting. Essential class to those truly interested in neuro

Dr. Devine really ignited my interest in neuroscience and inspired me to actually switch my concentration to Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience. He is so well versed in the topics he discusses and genuinely cares about students. He was always very responsive over email, answered any questions students had in class, and his office hours helped!

Comment:
Dr. Devine is a great professor and is clearly passionate about teaching neuroscience. However, he goes off on tangents a bit too often, causing him to not have enough time to cover all the material. Tests draw on content from both the lectures and the textbook, so follow his advice on reading the text before each lecture and you'll do very well.

One of my least favorite professors I have had at UF. The material is very interesting but I do not think he is a good lecturer. He is extremely cocky and goes of on tangents during lecture that has nothing to do with what will be in the exam. He never gives a straightforward answer because he wants to seem smarter than everyone else.

Dr. Devine is an amazing professor. I have a lot of respect for him and plan on taking his graduate course. You learn so much about the brain and how it works through his class. Overall, there are 4 tests that make your grade, one of which is dropped. It is crucial that you go to the lectures and read the text book if you want an A in the class.

I loved this class! Dr. Devine is really energetic and makes lectures super exciting and fun. The material is a bit hard, since I never took a bio class before, but Dr. Devine made the material understandable. Really great semester!

Dr. Devine is easily the best professor at UF. His lectures are engaging, enjoyable, and more informative than you could ever imagine. That being said, this is not an easy class, you have to work for it. But don't worry, his exams are beyond fair and as long as you read and pay attention, you'll do fantastically.

Run and don't look back! The quizzes are easy, and the 3 assignments are fairly straightforward. The tests are very very specific. If you don't read the chapters thoroughly and watch the lectures, you are screwed. If you must take this class, do NOT take it over the summer.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! You will hate your life more than you already do!! The workload is ridiculous especially if you take this over summer with other classes and a job..... Exams are so detailed you need to read and reread the chapters and watch 12+ hours of lectures just to pass and if you don't well then forget it, you're screwed.

Material is dense and sometimes impossible to distinguish from an unedited Wikipedia page in syntax and structure. There is no way to study for this class without brute force memorization. Unlike other classes that place priority on comprehension of core concepts, the emphasis here is on memorizing loosely tied, but disparate concepts. DO NOT TAKE.

I actually agree with the previous reviewer. I personally love(d) neuroscience. I had the most interest in this course. The exams, however, are ridiculously difficult relative to other exams, just by the specific MEMORIZATION required to answer the questions. Memorize all of his slides. No main ideas are tested, just specific knowledge.

He doesn't write the exams. The TA does and it's either shoot or miss with the difficulty. I have never struggled with grades in a course, and I've taken biochemistry and organic chemistry. The exams are horrible, and this is coming from someone who got A's on the biochemistry exams. Besides that, he's a great guy and the class is interesting.

Probably one of the best professors I've had at UF thus far. The guy knows his stuff and wants to do the best he can to make sure his students do too. Not an easy class at all, but if you stay on top of the readings and pay attention in all of his lectures it becomes manageable.

Nice guy, but hard class. The people who did well in this class already had a lot of biology knowledge. If you don't like biology and learning about neurons, don't take this class. To get an A, you really have to read the textbook before class bc otherwise you'll have no idea what he's talking about (unless you're a pre-med major).
