Comment:
You would really need to pay attention and be a very good note taker because all he did was talk the entire class. He would never write anything on the board, so you would have to listen carefully. He was also rude to many students, especially when they got up to go to the bathroom, or even asked questions.

I had to take this class twice. The first time I got an "F" and the second time I got a "C." You REALLY have to pay attention in class and take notes in order to pass. You have to be extremely good at talking notes, since he doesn't write anything on the board.

Mr. Burke was very disrespectful to some of the students that were in my class. For example, he was very rude to a girl who had gotten up to use the restroom, he told her she was being "disruptive, annoying, and a nuisance to his teaching." This made the classroom environment very hostile. He would also yell at students for asking questions. Bad!

BRILLIANT MAN. His class was tough, but if you have any interest in philosophy at all then this is the guy to learn from. He is very passionate about philosophy and ethics and it shows.

TERRIBLE. DO NOT TAKE. He is a really nice guy but does not know how to teach or set his students up for success. He lectures the whole entire time and does not write on the board or provide powerpoint slideshows. He goes off topic so it's incredibly hard to follow. Overall, terrible experience. Made my semester 100x more stressful than necessary.

Lectures entire class without PowerPoints. Extremely monotone & tells irrelevant stories. Gives you chapters to read but does not lecture on information in the book. "Lectures are your study guide." He thinks he's an English teacher. Avoid him

Was extremely Monotone became my worst most boring class. Lectures all day about him self. He also grades like we're going for our doctorate, returned every students paper for a page number issue that was so pointless even the English teachers at Ecc thought it was stupid.

David Burke has a pleasant personality, but he is not a good professor for Philosophy 101. He teaches his 101 course like it is a graduate course. I earned the highest grade in my class, a B. He does not do a good job relating philosophical concepts to real world experiences. He is lecture heavy, and digresses often.

Thinks he is an English teacher. Grades papers based heavily on format before even looking at the content. Mess up any portion of the content on accident and you lose 25% on the paper instantly. This is before he grades for content, in a class where content is the most important thing. Horrible way to teach, overall very bad teacher.

worst teacher i have ever had. never writes notes for you to follow. everything is verbal. does not use d2l at all so you dont know what your grade is in the class until you have a test. if you ask him a question he sees it as wasting his time. does not respect the students.

First day of class I knew I was in trouble. Heavy emphasis on the syllabus and is already talking so much about the 10 page research paper. Talks about funny stories on how students lost points on it by doing for example a table of contents for the paper. Super monotone and talks down to students! I've never had a problem with a teacher before.

Burke knows the material very well. I'm sure he knows the whole book by heart. Although, I do not recommend him for philosophy. I failed his class one semester, then I tried again another semester and dropped his class. The subject gets confusing and Burke doesn't explain it as if you're learning it for the first time.

Dr. Burke is a very educated person and knows his material, he knows the entire book by heart, but his tests are pretty tough he only has two (mid-term and final). has seven pretty easy quizzes as long as you pay attention in class. He is very tough on having the term paper submitted on time, but he will not give them back in a timely fashion.

Comment:
Dr. Burke likes to trip his students up. There's a superiority complex involved with this teacher. His passion is clearly the Eastern philosophers, which doesn't come into the course until the last third of the semester. Read your chapters, they're short. Ask clarifying questions. He won't respond to emails, but he will make office appointments.

Comment:
Dr. Burke seems like a nice guy, but he likes to see himself as superior to the student, which is his downfall. He does not respond to emails, he intentionally has questions on his quizzes that are not covered in class or in the book. He doesn't do power points, and he cannot command the classroom. Do not take Dr. Burke, he will ruin your GPA.

taking his class has been the worst decision in my high school career so far! He is RUDE to students, and uninterested in helping you out with anything!! It's like pulling a tooth getting him to answer a simple question of yours. Pop quizzes on material not even covered. He doesn't review or help review for any tests! beware. He ruined my GPA.
