wanted to be an english major before i took this course but collings tends to pigeon hole students. lack of participation or constructive comments in class gets you pegged as unintelligent which reflects in your paper grades.

Professor Collings is an incredibly intelligent man and very helpful in lending that intelligence to his students, as well as explaining aspects of literature that one never would have thought about. He pushes you to look past the face value of things.

Excellent professor. He has a very methodical approach to his lessons. You work through what it is he wants us to get to and we always get there each class. You feel like you've accomplished something with each discussion. Great reading selections. Very interesting guy. SUPER soothing voice.

What I will remember most is being graded out of 90% instead of 100% - meaning HW is 25%, class partic. - 25%...etc. it only added up to 90%?!?! the class was pretty hard, I went into office hours every friday and sometimes directly after class still only managed at best B- on my papers. what was he looking for? i agree with pompous descrip

closeted jerk. most days he talked down to us, was pompous, and really mean and strict with grades. although he writes a lot of feedback, none of it directly deals with what you did wrong and what he wants you to improve upon. if you have to take him, then kiss up to him--ask him what he has published, what he is researching, tell him he is god.

Intriguing professor, very conversational outside of class, very interesting material. Only downside is that he has the most soothing voice I've ever heard and it tends to make you drowsy, no matter how fascinating the class discussion.

He was always willing to meet with students, but he was such a hard grader that it didn't make much of a difference...but the class helped me to decide NOT to major in english. Easy Homework and the midterm was cake if you can memorize, papers=impossible
