Dr. Oates was the worst professor I had during my entire time at Clark. He was not helpful on the few occasions when I asked for clarification or help. Only occasionally were his long lectures illuminating. I love the study of literature, but I hated it in that class.

I took him for both world literature and american literature. He comes off as a smug white English professor at first, and likes to plug his own writings in the class, but he's been very helpful and friendly and has introduced me to some great novels! I still keep in touch with him. He no longer teaches here, however.

This man is so pretentious is not even funny. He is an egomaniac who belongs in a setting where people actually care what he's shooting out his rear. His superiority is so suffocating I dropped out after three weeks of having to call him "Doctor Oates." His class focus on more of his life and his book than actual course work.

Love this guy. He will make you want to be a Lit major. My favorite teacher at clark. He has revived my love of reading single handedly.

I had him for Eng 102. i really wish i had him for 101 and then 102, because he has VERY high expectations. he knows his stuff, a lil full of himself, tends to treat writing like a science rather than an art. as a person i like him, as a teacher, his criticisms were harsh, and somewhat belittle to self esteem. 60% of my class failed or dropped.

Good teacher or not, this guy was horribly rude and smug. He seems to think very highly of himself and very poorly of his students. My least favorite teacher I've EVER had at clark. I recommend staying far from his classroom if you want to have any respect for english teachers.

Like to talk politics too much. I felt politically persuaded instead of being taught how to write research papers.

This teacher was horrible! Not even exaggerating. He makes you feel horrible about your papers, I spent close to five hours revising one draft, and he told me he didn't see any change at all! Most English 102 teachers will let you choose your own topic, but he MADE us write it about the environment. I wouldn't take his class again.

One of the best English teachers I've ever had. I think some students are surprised by Lit classes that actually make you read and interpret the material, but that's what you signed up for!I learned so much from this class that I still use in my University english courses.

Dr. Oats is an awesome teacher. For those people complaining about the environmentalism overtone of his class, read the class synopsis before your register. It tells you thats what he will be teaching on. He is very helpful. You actually have to work for your grade. Dont slack off and you can easily pull an A. Easiest english class Ive every had.

This professor to start was actually not that bad. As we progressed in the class we got farther along on the infamous English 102 ten page paper. When we had our scheduled appointments to go over my paper I received the most belittling comments I've ever heard in my life. If you want to be talked down to, please, take this class.

Oates is a strange guy. His voice gets high pitched when he gets excited about something. Basically really annoying. The tests probably would have been easier if I had actually read the text.. So obviously, read the text alot and you'll be fine. I thought the tests were harder than the final & midterm.

Not easy Lots of exercises and textbook use. This class will improve your writing however its hard. We had to do 4 papers (you can rewrite the first 3). We also had to read a novel. Oates will also teach you grammar like crazy if you don?t know it. But overall class is not horrible just a little time consuming. Will help you but you have to ask.

Nice teacher, although TONS of reading for his American Literature class. The whole hour and a half class is lecture, so at times it gets VERY boring. Quizzes are givin every 2 weeks. No re-takes.

Dr. Oates is a wonderful teacher who really knows his subject. His class isn't easy and I think that's where 80% of the horror stories are coming from: people looking for an easy 'A' who were shot down by actually having to work. If you want to learn, take classes from Dr. Oates.

David Oates is a wonderful professor if you are a moron. The people in the class who couldn't write a sentence were getting A's and the people who were good writers were getting their papers handed back to them without a grade. I have been a professional writer for years. He would hand papers back because he couldn't understand some of the words

Even though he's already got bad scores, lets add some more negativity. Extreme dislike for this man. My very first class out of high school, and the only grade I've ever got below an A. He's borderline ****. Only talks about himself and nature, very boring.
