The guy doesn't really care about the class, he's always going on trips and forcing the TA to teach for him. No practice midterms or final. Doesn't post solutions for anything on the lousy class website - it takes to much effort.

Dr. Karlen's heart definitely isn't in teaching--and it shows. His classes are pretty much just Power Point presentations. His finals are notorious. He is helpful outside of class, but it seems like he'd rather be anywhere else rather than answering your questions.

For about the last third of the semester, not a single person in the class knew what was going on. Not nearly enough examples in class; too much powerpoint; very difficult to follow; EXTREMELY difficult midterm and final. Don't take this course unless you have statistics 260, math 200, 201, 233A.

We covered a lot of material (too much, we did some again in 321B), but he didn't seem to require a deep understanding. He gave "what you need to know" and "what you need to memorize" sheets before tests. Notes were available on webct.
