Dr. Akers makes class fun, and has great stories about her travels. She likes to listen to her students' opinions. She is a tough grader. There are two group presentations. She does offer a lot of extra credit.

Deborah is a great lecturer with wonderful stories. She makes class fun, and she listens to what her students think about the class. Exams are hard, but she'll drop the questions that everyone gets wrong. However, she doesn't give any feedback on papers, so you never know why you got the grade you did. Overall a great lecturer.

I came here specifically to leave a good review for this teacher, I had the best quarter of my life. This teacher clearly has lots of experience in the field and so she has AMAZING stories that make coming to class every day worth it. Almost makes me want to be an anthro major.

She has very good intentions and she is really enthusiastic about the subject. However, her lectures are disorganized and it is not always clear what information she wants the class to learn. Reading the book is pretty much mandatory because most of the information is not covered in class.

Dr. Akers is very passionate about teaching and wants to improve, which I greatly admire as a soon-to-be teacher. She implemented some of our recommendations right away. The exams are moderately difficult due to too specific of questions, she drops questions that many get wrong. Her anecdotes make the class interesting. 2nd Half is project heavy.

While Dr. Akers seems to really enjoy teaching, no one enjoys listening to her teach. Her lectures are extremely disorganized, making them hard to follow and dull. The two midterms were worth 80% of the grade and the questions on them were extremely unfair. The two projects took a lot of work for such a small percentage of the grade.

Anyone expecting an engaging class should not take Anthropology with her. The two exams are weighted far too heavily (70% of your grade). I had to write a 10-page research paper which counted for 10% of my grade while most of my classmates had to make 5-slide PowerPoint presentations which counted for the same percentage.

Comment:
The material for the first section is quite dry. Tests count for too many points (70% total), are extremely difficult even though all multiple choice, include info that she says isn't necessary. Fairly lengthy projects (two research projects that aren't worth enough). Very challenging and didn't enjoy her teaching or material. I don't recommend her

While professor Akers seems to be a brilliant woman involved in some very significant research, I can see almost no reason she gets paid to teach. Her English skills are mediocre at best. Her slides and quizzes are unclear at best, and her personal attention is patronizing and often incorrect.

She is very passionate about anthropology; no doubt about that, but the class is weighted to unreasonable proportions. I wrote a 12-page paper worth 10% of my grade and the 50-question midterm was worth 35% of my grade. Questions on exams are VERY confusing. She's terrible at writing questions. She's nice, but expects you to know EVERY detail.

She's really nice and passionate about the course, but her exams are weighted far too greatly. The debates are fun and the quizzes aren't bad, but the final is ridiculous. Be sure to study extra extra hard for it. Memorize EVERYTHING! It's ridiculous. It alone brought my final grade down a full letter grade. Good for a GEC Biological Science course

She's very nice and friendly, but the exams are weighted too heavily and the final is a nightmare. The class is very interesting and the final project is fun, but the exams are hard. Be careful with the last exam because it is very specific. There is no such thing as studying too much for it. I would recommend this class - I took it as a GEC course

Professor seemed clueless. Exams are weighted too much and are difficult. Projects are fun and insightful but they count for next to nothing. She's a nice lady she just is kind of an unfair grader and her exams that are worth too much are very nitpicky. I'm sure AnthroH200 is a great class, but take it from someone else.

If you're into applied anthropology, take this class from her. Otherwise, you'll feel like it's a waste of your time. Rushes through the primatology/human evolution section that most profs spend the whole quarter on, meaning less time to process the information. Doesn't answer questions well either. Frustrating for an anthro major.

I love her! She is so interesting and really knows what she is talking about. I enjoy going to her class, and it helped me decide to be an anthro major. The only downsides are that she is not an easy grader, and her tests are worded kind of strangely
