She makes you develop a passion for English and loves to see engaged, motivated students. Very kind professor who genuinely cares about her students. Thoughtful participation is important to her as well as a willingness to learn. Her feedback is very detailed and constructive and she makes the classroom setting lively and fun.

So smart. Engaging. Kind, understanding; will work with you to help you succeed if you're having problems, if you ask. Don't take her class if you want a blow off, but if you love English or Film (depending on which you're taking with her) and look forward to truly learning about the subject and improving your writing, you won't be disappointed.

The American Film had great selections, Shostak led some good discussions, and the assignments were standard for a film class--simple enough while still challenging. She was very friendly and approachable, and open with allowing people speak their minds on film.

Honest to goodness--I'm picky and I wish I could go back and take her Narrative and the Real World class over again. One ofmy greatest life regrets is sleeping through her Virgin Suicides seminar. Shostak would lure me back to school! She's amazing.

She seems to pick favourites in class discussion, and listens more carefully to their points. If you aren't a Marxist, you won't be a favourite. She isn't a perceptive reader or a very original thinker. Several different profs teach Jr. IS- take someone else's version if you can.
