Dr. Cronan is one of the world's sweetest, understanding human beings. I have taken both Old English and History of the English Language with him and they are both incredibly challenging courses. LOTS of memorization of texts and paradigms. However, he curves the test scores and offers a lot of help whenever you need it. He is fabulous.

Only recommend if you LOVE linguistics. The class I found at times impossible. We dive directly into translating, which is intimidating (no vocabulary). Lots to memorize for each test (300 lines of translations) as well as paradigms and so on.. Taking his other classes before would have made Old English less daunting. 3 tests are the ENTIRE grade.

The subject matter is incredibly dry, but I actually found myself really enjoying the class. My only quip: Cronan is extremely soft-spoken, so he is sometimes hard to hear. Overall, though, he is really sweet and knowledgeable, and very understanding if you're having trouble in the course.

Professor Cronan is a nice professor. However, I do not like how he teaches. He rushes and is everywhere. From the beginning I felt lost and because of that I did poorly. I know I could have done better but it was too much too keep up and lots of homework. If you don't get the homework you will fail the tests. You have to do all the reading also

History of the English Language. Not the easiest subject in the world, but he makes it worth the work. Really cool insight into how English developed. He lectures the entire period and all of it is important to know for the tests. Do yourself a favor and show up to class - only those of us who went the entire semester did well.

I took his CH 201 honors class. Extremely boring. Drags out discussion long after no one has anything else to say. His study guides are helpful only if you know everything about everything you read -- impossible to pass the tests if you don't go to class. Be prepared for a lot of reading and writing.

CH201 was a pretty dull class overall, although I did learn a lot. Lectures tended to be a bit dry, but Professor Cronan did his best to make them somewhat interesting. His study guides are really long and take a ton of time but if you do them, you'll get As on the tests.

The only reason why I passed this class was because my discussion leader, Lin Xing, was awesome! He was a graduate student and I always felt like younger teachers knew how to better relate to students. Cronan had dry lectures and LONG study guides but if you choose the right discussion leader you will pass the class with flying colors.

Attendance is a huge part of the grade, but just by showing up to lecture and the discussion you get tons of points. By keeping up with the reading and assignements, you should be able to obtain a good grade. Don't take Barbara Smalls as your discussion leader, she is awful!!!!

This can be an incredibly difficult class, but only if you don't try! He's pretty fair when it comes to grading, and if you haven't been doing well one exams and stuff, he'll grade you based on your improvement, which is nice. Don't expect this to be an easy class; it's a lost of work, but worth it! You learn a lot from him.

Cronan is an extremely fair grader. His tests are difficult but if you study properly and actually try you will get a good grade. Your discussion leader is everything, get McMullen. She is strict but fair and honest. Plus shes pretty cool.

For CH 201, Cronan was alright. He wasn't uptight or anything. The lectures got kind of boring sometimes, and he had us write a "report" once a week. The workload got kind of heavy sometimes, but the TA I had, Beau Rogers, was very helpful. If you can, take it with him. He's a super chill dude, but he'll grade you fairly.

Fantastic Prof! Dr. Cronan really made the topic engaging. He is an excellent lecturer. He made material that I wouldn't have cared about very interesting and applicable. Clearly passionate and knowledgeable about the material. I am a graduating senior, and Dr. Cronan has been my favorite professor in my undergrad career.

Dr. Cronan is actually really awesome, despite being old. If you stay on top of the reading and do the assignments - which when it comes down to it are all dead simple and graded rather easily - you can pass. It takes up a lot of time but worth it, and his website is so helpful you won't know how to handle it!

Dr. Cronan is an excellent lecture and he always makes the subject matter interesting. His tests may seem to have difficult criteria at times, but he grades fairly otherwise. Despite the high amount of required reading, most of the writing assignments are brief. Overall, this class is fairly straightforward.

A very good professor who knows everything he lectures on more than any of his students ever could hope to. Great lecturer, gives a lot of practices you don't turn in, but I highly recommend you keep up. His tests are very hard and if you slip up on your daily practices, it can have serious consequences.

AMAZING. Dr. Cronan clearly has a passion for what he does, and his Honors class was so involved! Discussions are great, they really make you think. He is one of the best professors I've ever had. I can't speak for his lecture classes, but he is astoundingly smart and intellectual. I think he grades fairly easy too. TAKE HIS CLASSES!

COULD NOT STAY AWAKE for lecture. if you fall asleep easily, this is not for you. Because discussion leaders grade ALL your work, your grade depends on that person. He's a passionate teacher, but bring your laptop for notes so you can fill in the blanks on the slides. It will help you stay awake. I wouldn't recomment this class.
