Comment:
As of Spring 2016, it is time for this professor to go. The tests are open-note, so you are not graded on your knowledge of history, but your skills at note taking. I will walk away from this class having learned very little. Also, the professor uses NO technology and out of class expectations are unclear. He does not follow textbook. AVOID CLASS

The best professor that I have ever had. Very straightforward traditional medium of instruction from an incredibly knowledgeable scholar. Anyone on here complaining about how Dr. Wachtel failed to "engage them" needs to grow up and learn to listen to a lecture, take notes and read a few books for a course like a real college student.

Dr. Wachtel is an amazing professor in many ways. Having been a professor of history at Maryville University for over 50 years, Dr. Wachtel knows his material and is very enthusiastic about it. His courses are well organized and straight forward. Classes will consist of him lecturing." He will not waist your time with trivial matters or activities.

Least favorite class. He goes on, even when class ends. 3 tests (open note) which means a lot of stuff is covered (keep organized). Bring a laptop/record. Write as much of what he says down. The only thing we used the book for was to help start research for our one paper. What the book says is different from what he tells us in class.

Probably the most boring class I have ever taken. I suggest using a laptop to take notes or you won't have a hand left after writing all of his notes. His tests are open notes, but that didn't make things easy at all because of the amount of info he gives you. Good luck...

This professor turned my interest in history on to full speed ahead. I now research and write surveys for National Register of Historic Places for the US National Parks

This class has the most boring lecture, he laughs at his own jokes which no one else gets. He talks a mile a minute and jumps around so much your notes are so confusing. I'm a good note taker but it makes open note tests hard when you have information in five different spots.

Wachtel knows his stuff, but his classes are pretty boring. They are 100% lecture and the tests are open note - if you can take notes you will get an A. The subjects could be made to be much more interesting if there was some give and take or just some excitement on his part. But if you don't need/expect that, then you will be fine.
