Comment:

At first I hated this class. Dr. Selfridge is very confusing and vague in his explanations. I don't think this was all his fault though. I think they threw this class on him. Definitely take it from Dr. Wilde. However, in the end, Dr. Selfridge was more than fair with grading and office hours help. Everything ended up okay.

Tests are terrible. Only good thing is everyone does so bad that you'll probably get a 50-60% just on guessing.

Means well, but his teaching style is very haphazard and hard to follow. No logical flow in his presentation of the material. I found that my time was much better spent taking notes from the textbook.

This is a very difficult class, but Dr. Selfridge is genuinely helpful and wants everyone to succeed. Quizzes are a lot more indicative of what will be on the test than is homework, so know your quizzes extremely well. It may take a while to get used to the curve; if you get a 60 on a test, don't despair.

Study and know the concepts well. Often he bases tests very closely on the quizzes he has given, so study them very well. He is always happy to talk to students and help them understand.

Comment:

Its true about the difficulty of the class. I don't think it so much the teacher but the content thats difficult. Its going to be hard no matter who you take it from. I do recommend Selfridge because he teaches what he calls "boardroom engineering." It requires more thought and less memorization of formulas and such. His tests reflect this.

Comment:

Gives tests where the average is ~%50. During lectures though gives great insight into the subject. Watch for times where he says "I like to look at this problem like this..." and you will get a good grade. He makes sure you learn and know your stuff. Tests are accurate of what you understand, not accurate of you being able to crunch problems.

Very difficult tests. Nothing like the homework and always very tricky. It didn't really seem like a good test of what we learned. He often has daily quizzes that are also tricky, but, not as bad. If you're failing every test, don't worry, probably everyone else is too.

The class is hard, but he really cares about the students. If you need any kind of help, ask and ye shall receive. He went way out of his way to help me on many occassions.

He does indeed have difficult tests, however he does really know his stuff and what's going on. He can answer any question. His tests are meant to be difficult to get you to think and they are curved based on the highest score which is usually 60-70.

Dr. Selfridge really knows his stuff and he expects us to, too. Be ready for difficult tests, but a prof who is willing to go the extra mile for his students.

Comment:

Likes to give tests where the class average is 40-45%. Not a bad teacher in and of himself, but the combination of a difficult course, a worthless text (written by a BYU prof), and impossible tests made it a rather unpleasant experience
