Although he is a respected professor I did not like him at all as a professor. He was good at what he did and knew what he was talking about, but he made my year as a freshmen a living hell. He picks favorites too, which is the worst about him. Maybe I would have been better able to take his class if I was more mentally prepared.

Fantastic drawing professor! Very tough and really pushes you but isn't a jerk about it. He is very talented and very passionate about drawing and drawing techniques and he gives creative assignments. By NO means an 'easy A' but you will learn so much and benefit from every piece of work you do. Only complaint is that he is sometimes a bit vague.

The best teacher you will ever have. Yes, he is tough. But if you actually want to learn something instead of just getting by with minimal effort, you couldn't ask for a better teacher. Wirls is simply great. Along the 2 semesters with him I have compared my classworks and homework with friends in other drawing classes. As result his class is THE MOST HELPFUL for any art student especially if you're a design major. The assignments require LOTS of effort and time but they're ALWAYS rewarding. BEST DRAWING TEACHER IN MY LIFE !

Amazing teacher. I felt honored to be able to take his class. Even if you can't draw, you will be able to improve dramatically if you put the expected amount of work into the class. Extremely demanding, but well humored and supportive. One of the best classes I have taken at Pratt, or ever for that matter.

He is so awesome. That's my opinion. If you can't or don't know how to draw at the beginning, and you put your six hours in (with effort), you'll know by the end of the class. Make sure you love to draw, and even art school, because all of these skills (composition, line, technical, and gesture) will be used and appreciated in all majors.

Crazy difficult. Really better for someone who already knows how to draw and wants to refine their skills. Not so great for those who have real difficulty drawing at all. Will offer practically no encouragement. If you suck at drawing, after 6 hours with this guy, all you'll be is depressed.

I felt privileged to be in Doug's class. He won the Distinguished Teacher Award last Spring and he definitely deserved it -- he is as helpful as you will allow him to be, and he will always work with you and stay on your level. He's a good guy with a decent sense of humor. Show him respect and he'll do you the same courtesy.

Doug is great drawing teacher. He's funny, quirky, and enjoyable as a professor. I definitely improved a lot after taking his course. His critiques are to the point, and knows how to let students realize their own weaknesses and strengths. His assignments are fun as hell-it explores drawing in diff levels. It's every drawing lover's dream course.
