Lectures are useless. He rarely teaches anything in class on the test. He says there's stuff in the pod cast and book that you can study. However, there's hours and hours of pod casts to comb through 90% of which won't be on the exams. I am a straight A student and I barely got away with a C+.

Tough class if you do not know anything about jazz. I was president of my high school jazz band and still had to work really hard for a decent grade. If you skip class you won't pass.

I loved jazz until I took this professor. 10% of lectures are on the tests. I wasted so much time taking notes and reading the book, only to answer questions that weren't covered. He offers extra help, but half-heartedly. Unless you are a music major WITH an established relationship with him, don't take class. Not worth a gen-ed credit.

I enjoyed taking Professor Mapp's Growth and Dev of Jazz class. He is strict on attendance, but it's only a one day a week class so it is not bad. He is extremely passionate about what he teaches and that makes it more enjoyable for the students to learn. Just do your work, pay attention, and show up to class and you will do alright!

He was a really good professor and a super funny guy to watch in his element. He's super passionate about his work and just wants everyone to appreciate jazz like he does. But if you do not have an interest in jazz or history, do not take this class. I struggled a lot because I had trouble memorizing everything.

This is possibly the worst professor I have had (or ever will have) at Rowan. He is arrogant, rude, and a self-admitted terrible teacher. He lectures on things that are NOT on the test, so reading is necessary (every detail matters). If you have a question or answer one wrong, he belittles you and gives you attitude. Do not take this class.

Do NOT take this class! If you don't understand the difference between instruments sounds and different artists you will have an extremely hard time. He puts stuff on the test that isn't even in the chapter we are tested on. I do not recommend this class for anyone who has a hard time with music. He says it is an easy A but it is definitely NOT.

He is a terrible professor. The quizzesexams are very tough and asks questions he doesn't cover nor that are in the book. It's as if he expects you to become a jazz enthusiast and know every little detail. He does give a lot of extra credit however. He also doesn't give homework.

i generally enjoy all types of music, but this class kind of ruins jazz for me. there is so much pressure. you have to know a lot of extra info for the tests that he sometimes doesnt even discuss. not an easy A at all. but if you read and pay attention, with all the EC he gives, you should get a decent grade.

This class is basically like taking a history class; its mostly memorizing dates, names, when, where, how, etc. The textbook is used a LOT, and comes in handy during the final when you're studying the types of jazz and how they sound. Mapp doesn't really establish a relationship with the students though, he basically just talks and assigns homework

The guys kind of a tool, he goes out of his way to make problems for students he doesn't like. He basically made the Contemporary Music Ensemble a platform from which he could stroke his ego. Tells the class that he's a terrible teacher, insinuating that hes one of those edgy "tough love" kind of teachers from movies, but really he's just a ****.

Worst experience with a teacher at Rowan by far. The man fell into the chance to make an extra buck by teaching Contemporary Ensemble for a semester, though he is a self proclaimed horrible teacher, and knows nothing about composition. Completely redirected the ensemble into an amateur wank fest of awful concerts, performing heartless music.

This man has a way of deducing his students' self-esteem down to nothing. He has a chip on his shoulder, and feels the need to belittle his students with sarcastic remarks and "holier than thou" attitude. I would not recommend him as a teacher, and I would not recommend him to give directions to the nearest gas station.
