I intended to take his follow up course the following semester because I enjoy the subject greatly, but after his initial introduction I decided against it. He lectures by reading out of a book, his tests are broad and unnecessarily long. I got along with Dr. Harrell very well, but his teaching technique .....

This man knows his stuff. I learned more in this course than I thought possible. But it was a huge amount of work. the worst part: he called us "idiots". Honestly. We weren't. We were all working adults with (most of us) families trying to get a good education and pay the bills. We were at the Brevard branch, now closed. Shame on you, Dr. Harrell.

Very traditional style of teaching, which I like. The whole Rollins conference plan gets real old real quick. His tests are very difficult, almost legendary, but you learn a lot. I'm glad I had a few gos with him before his retirement.

Harrell's old-school: he expects respectful behavior & his exams are HARD. But the 2 classes I've had w/ him have been the most rewarding ever. I've learned SO much more w/ him & retained nearly everything. If you're a slacker/whiner, he's not for you. A's ARE possible- I've had 2. He's got a great scathing sense of humor.

As a historian, his abilities are impeccable. As a professor, his curved grading scale explicates poor testing and/or measurements.His insults and discouraging remarks hinder the learning process. Such abusive tactics constitute successful reverse psychology in some settings - a leading liberal arts college is not one of them.

Class is easy-going (but boring - not very interactive), but honestly, the tests are the hardest I've enountered yet! Despite warnings that you won't make an A, it can be done if you are disciplined in studying and good at memorization. He is a riot if you have a wry sense of humor!

Dr. Harrell is very difficult, but you will learn a lot. The tests are not difficult if you devote the proper time to studying (i.e. a lot). Lots of memorization. Very knowledgeable about the material. Willing to help. Expects good writing skills. Tantrums are given only if the class deserves them (contrary to other reviewers' notes)

I'm only 1/2 way thru the term, but felt compelled to write a review to those who may take his film class in Spring. This is the hardest class I've ever taken. He demands way too much out of students. DO NOT EXPECT AN A. If I am lucky, I will get a B-. His exams are very difficult and he's unclear sometimes. U spend hrs. studying for a C-D. Beware!

Best teacher i ever had, very interesting, knows alot so much about the subject it's inspiring. He brought Nazi paraphanelia such as flags, crosses and you can actually see them and even touch them. dont expect an A though, you have to bust your ass and in the end you it pays off!

Sets students up for failure by stating that NO ONE gets an A unless questions are answered verbatim from the book. Throws temper tantrums, curses, grades on a warped curve, gives tests to other students to pass on if you are not in class. all in all an idiot that is full of information about this topic!

Ed Harrell, is an excellent Professor. If you are looking for a Professor who will teach you NOTHING- then don't take him. If you are willing to work hard and want to leave the class having learned something beneficial, then you should take this class. I have had him twice and I absolutely treasure the knowledge I have gained.

THis guy is a riot, he throws tantrums for no apparent reason packs up his stuff, leaves the room and later comes back to scold you again. His class is hard if you do not read the material (simply attending class can accomplish this since he reads from the book 4 u) don't take if you dont have time to read or deal with overgrown toddlers!

love dr. harrell. very eccentric man - a little idealistic, perhaps, and therefore can get disappointed or pissed off at his class, but always totally straightforward and obviously very passionate about his job and the subjects he teaches. gives hard ass tests, but not without abundant preparation (will give you chapter and verse for test questions). definitely worthwhile.

I will admit that his classes are and will be the hardest classes I have ever taken, but he knows so much and I always feel like I've really gained something from taking his courses. If you want to work hard and learn alot from a great man, take his classes!
