Do not take the "Stand-up Comedy as Literature" course. I am a senior and this is the worst course I have ever taken. He uses his own book,d that he wrote himself. He thinks he is funny and if you don't agree with what he thinks, he will argue with you and get mad. His tests are horrible and all about his own personal opinions. Take something else

Self promotion is the name of his game and not a very ethical teacher. Very scripted feedback that is always the same for everyone. Might be better for low level classes, but as a grad professor the class is just going through the motions. Play along and you'll do fine.

A polarizing figure to say the least, you either hate him or love him. I hate him, if we are in the same classroom we fight. He thinks he is funny and is deeply mistaken, his ego, however, would never allow him to see that. A tip for writing essays for him, write like you are writing to an infant, he has to have everything spelled out for him.

Take everything you ever knew about writing and start all over when you enter his classroom. He can be harsh, you must learn to write in a style that conforms to his. He's different, no doubt, then any other english professor but does it for the good of the student.

When it comes to Creative Writing, Dr. Tafoya is brash and can be harsh if you make basic grammar mistakes. However, his constant reminders of his pet peeves--"We need a scene here;" and "Show me one tear!"--will make you a better writer.
