Crazy old man. He has some pretty funny stories and likes it when you see him in office hours so he isn't all bad. Honestly though we don't learn anything and instead just go over the homework the entire time. If you're planning on living in France for some time I'd talk to him because he has some useful advice. I've had better though...

I took four years of Italian at other schools I have a fairly in depth background with Italian yet when this man would attempt to teach or speak the language it fell short. His class is a joke, if you feel like having a laugh then you can go but its pointless you learn nothing. Awful Teacher. Ciao

I would recommend taking French with another professor if you want to learn the language. If you want to get an easy A, the the class with him. He is really hard to understand because he doesn't really teach, just review. We watched a six hour movie in class. Make sure you attend the sessions because participation is a huge part of the grade.

Took for an independent study. Very easy class but he told me not to expect any help from him. I actually did not see him until the day of my final. Credit was solely for filling out the workbook and a brief final that was just translating sentences from his 102 class.

Funnest class ever. I did not know a word of Italian going into this class, left not knowing a word, and still managed an A. Just go to all of his classes - you get bonus points, and answer the questions early on because they are easy and won't pick you for later ones. He looks like Bilbo Baggins!!

Hands down worst professor I've ever had at Geneseo. I have never went to a class and learned so little. He drills you on stupid questions like "what shape is France?" for half, if not all of class. If you get something wrong, he laughs to himself. He's brilliant but too bad he can't teach to save his life. Plus he looks like quazi-moto.

if you're looking for legitimate knowledge in latin, this class is going to be tough for you. 40% of the class was participation so, you have to go to at least the majority of classes. you have to fill out a workbook but you also have to correct it yourself. its a fairly easy class overall

Pretty easy, but he doesn't put much effort into his teaching. He expects students to know French history and to be French majors. Each day he sits at a desk and drills students on French geography, culture, etc. He loves going off on tangents and yelling if you don't understand things right away. He actually laughs at students sometimes.

Perfect for those students who are forced to take a foreign language. Class is interesting and most of the grade is determined by just showing up.

He was among the most brilliant and engaging profs. I had and perhaps one of the most down-to-earth. I thoroughly recommend him for linguistics.

I absolutely need to learn latin for my major/minor. To my dismay, Dr. Vanvliet was able to apply absolutely none of his knowledge to actually teaching latin. He teaches almost nothing in class but rather tells pointless stories. Tests are incredibly easy and are the only graded assignments. Do not take if you wish to learn latin.

I'll say I learned a lot in his class, just not latin. Most of the work you have to do one your own, and if you suck at language, not good. but if you go every day you can get 20s on his test and you'll still pass... not that I would know...

Everyone complains that he can't teach (I'd heard from students and professors that he was terrible.) In reality, the guy is so incredibly smart that you feed off his knowledge. Lots of videos, easy workbook assignments. Go to every class for extra credit.

Expect to teach yourself the language from the textbook. Youll have to work pretty darn hard. A lot of his stuff was take home when I was there but I hear he's changed it. However, his stories show clearly how brilliant the man is. Just not very proficient in teaching the actual language,.

nice guy, goes off on really funny tangents and knows the origin of every word in the english language. if you participate and go to class he'll like you which is good cuz some of the grading on his tests is really subjective based on whether or not he likes you
