Prof. Vander Lei was amazing. I was dreading my English class, but she made it more than worth it. She encouraged me to take risks in my writing and I was greatly rewarded when I did. I looked forward to her class every day, and I knew that I could always stop by her office and talk to her about any problems I was having in the course. She's great.

You've got to take Vander Lei AT LEAST ONCE in your Calvin career! The sooner, the better. She's sophisticated in her writing methodology and clear in imparting concepts. My writing improved tremendously under her guidance. She sets extremely high expectations, but she's a very fair grader.

She is a very inspiring prof, helps students steer towards their writing/life goals with intense guidance. I learned a lot from this very spiritual and nice woman. Great English professor - knows all the quirks about people in the field. Likes workshop-based classes, which can be dull sometimes. Well-chosen readings for class, and she makes you consider the real world of writing (beyond the classroom). And definitely take her class if only for the amazing food she brings in!

A very demanding prof, but definitely worth it. She pushes you to write in ways you never thought you could. Vander Lei invests so much into her students and she brings yummy food to class often! Highly recommended, but don't be expecting the class be a walk in the park.

VanderLei is an amusing teacher in class. She is witty and funny and allows students to act the same way, so class is bearable and yet still productive. I do think that she is way too picky when grading papers, much pickier than my other Calvin profs.
