I took Great Books 1. It was horrible. You will get a good grade but it takes too much work. She is a good teacher but acts like reading 200 pages a week is okay.

Dr. Spitz talks about art because that's what she's interested in but I found it boring. Also she asks very pointed questions and targets specific students. Only reading homework, all essays in class. Giggles and says "brava!" when you're doing well.

Comment:

She is a great teacher! You read novels every week and discuss them during class. She is open to the opinions of others and is very passionate about the novels we read. I got to read so many children's stories like a Christmas Carol and Frankenstein. It felt more like free reading than homework. It's pretty easy to get an A in too. Take this class!

Comment:

This is the hardest class I ever took. There is only a midterm and a final in this class and if you don't do well on them, you're screwed. She is very full of herself and if you disagree with her views, you won't do well. My advice to you is to run as far as you can. Don't take this class with her unless you want to fail. Find another section.

I thought she was a very fair professor and open to a lot of discussion. I don't consider myself a great writer or interpreter of literature but I enjoyed trying so I did well in the class. Read all the material and participate in the seminar and you should do fine. If you don't like discussing literature don't bother.

Walked in the first day and told us that "we will not learn any real world info in class, only inner knowledge." Asks for your opinion, then dismisses it, regardless of facts, unless it agrees with her. If you believe yourself very logical, avoid.

Overly dramatic and excessively demanding for a 200-level course. Insisted that students arrive to class 15 minutes early and leave 15 minutes late without regard for other courses immediately before or after. Has no tolerance for anything not done precisely the way she wants, yet is very hypocritical on a number of topics. Avoid!

Spitz is very hypocritical and doesn't say what she means. If you disagree with her opinions (even though literature is all about interpretation) she will garde you poorly. She has favorites and doesn't understand that her's isn't the only class we're taking. Not very approachable. A little self-absorbed.

She teaches her opinions as though they're fact, and doesn't understand what could possibly be wrong with that. She professes that there are no wrong opinions, yet routinely tells students they have misinterpreted one of her beloved texts. Also, she tries to add random French lessons to the class where they don't fit. She is an awful person.

Spitz is a tough, astute woman guised by delicate physical features. Don't let it fool you. Her class was the only class I have ever received a B in - and the class I have worked the hardest for. I learned so much in her class that I would probably opt to take her again. One thing that some might find annoying, however, is her snobby tendencies.

Could easily play Professor Trelawney at Hogwarts. A little over dramatic occasionally but very passionate about the material she covers. She expects the best from you and makes this very clear. Allows you to do creative writing assignments for the midterm and final, which is just cool. Overall, a pretty good professor.

At the beginning of our class, I was dreading the thought of spending an entire semester with Spitz. But now that it is all over...I can say that she has been one of my most influential teachers. She's a very sweet woman and very intelligent. I doubt I would have enjoyed a lecture class with her as much, but I thoroughly enjoyed a seminar class with her. I never felt like she played favorites. If you don't do the work and put in the effort, she won't give you a good grade, period. She was very fair and had a lot of good insight.

A little crazy...ok, maybe very crazy, but a very sweet woman. She and I locked horns a couple times over politics and other issues, but she did not let that affect my grades. I'd hardly say she plays favorites...or maybe it was just she likes everyone in my class. Great woman - you just have to give her a chance.
