Quizzes after every class but those are the only test you take throughout the semester except for the final. He loves what he teaches, so he is very passionate about it. If you ask him for help he will gladly meet up with you after class. I would definitely take him again.

Prof. Merino is an excellent teacher. He gives quizzes after every lecture but they are open book! Just make sure to do the required reading and homework before class. He likes to make some jokes that make class fun and upbeat. I would take him again if the chance was given.

it is an interesting class but one thing is for sure, YOU MUST READ THE ASSIGN READINGS!!!! there is a quiz based on the previous night's reading in EVERY class. but not only read you also have to PARTICIPATE!!! he always says "25% of your grade is based on participation" because its true!! if you read and participate you'll do great in the class!

Horrible teacher!!! if you don't mind ruining your GPA by all means take him!!! he gives out quizzes everyday and his grading scale is hard!!! 25% for the final and a paper 25%

Comment:

Merino is very passionate about what he teaches and it shows. He expects a lot of his students and if you want a good grade you must be willing to put in the work. If your Spanish is not up to par you will find his courses difficult as he has difficulty clarifying in English. I struggled in this class but still learned a lot and respect Merino.

It's obvious that Prof. Merino is passionate about teaching,and for that I give him credit. However, his English isn't great, and in the Advanced Translation class I took, it was frustrating trying to battle with him about whether MY English was correct in translations. That was my only gripe. Tough class, but worthwile.

Merino is a great teacher but he has very high expectations. Participation is worth 20% of your grade. NO textbooks required because you print them online. He is a tough teacher but you learn a lot from the class. I would recommend taking his class but you have to be willing to put in the effort.

This class is A LOT of work. There is a quiz EVERY day, you have to do a TON of reading outside of class, and there are 4 papers to write (which are not easy by any means). Sure, he's a nice guy, and if you do the work you'll be okay, but don't expect anything to come easily. He offers a lot of help outside of class, so use it if you need it.

Merino is an exceptional professor.He loves to teach and is devoted to his students.He expects class participation from ALL.Class is a bit challenging for non-native speakers but he is very fair and understands individual challenges.Some will disagree but he is an easy grader.He is open to REASONABLE criticism.Beware: he does expect you to learn!

I agree with all these people, he truly has a passion for what he does. Very difficult quizzes and exams, but he offers alternatives like extra credit and is always available to help. Most importantly, he encourages all of his students to participate and leaves the class open for discussion.
